AnkiHub Sync Canceled for new users

I recently was helping some people get setup on AnkiHub and noticed that they inexplicably got the ā€œAnkiHub Sync Cancelled messageā€ immediately, the first time trying to sync after logging in. The problem resolved itself after several minutes. This happened to 165193 and 165146. I couldn’t find anything on Sentry, but maybe some logs can help.

The way to fix this is:

  1. At the bottom of your Anki, go to create a deck, create one and name it anything
  2. In that deck, add a card (any card, just write something and add it)
  3. Sync

This has been happening occasionally to users and this weirdly fixes it

We need to figure out the cause and prevent this from happening. It’s a complete deal breaker for new users to encounter this in the first few minutes. It completely disrupts the onboarding experience.

@carolcani can we prioritize this issue in the next cool-down?

Sure! We’ll investigate it! Top of the list for next cooldown :+1:

@andrew We got a lot of reports of this issue months ago (Anking step deck wont install due to ankhihub sync cancelled) but nothing after the 24.06 release (due to this PR)

Are we still getting this error @Ahmed7 ? Or do you confirm that we’re not getting more user complaints since Abdo’s fix?

We’re approaching our cooldown period, so if that’s still an ongoing thing, we can prioritize it next week.

I saw this a bit last week, yes I believe it is still happening.

@Brian_BH I believe you saw a bit recently as well through Intercom?

When was Abdo’s fix?

@Ahmed7 I still see like 1-2 a week, something like that. It’s not super frequent, and seems less common than it used to be, but it does still occur with some regularity.

Fixed in 24.06 as mentioned above. I don’t think I saw reports of it occuring in 24.06 but let me know @Brian_BH @Ahmed7.

Are there any updates on this matter? Can we confirm if the issue has been resolved in the specific version Abdo mentioned?

New user here - I just encountered this bug but the recommendation to create a throwaway deck/card did fix the issue.

What Anki version are you currently on?
