Browser window fields: settings reset after sync--Please help

Hi all,

I really need some help. First let me say, I LOVE YOU GUYS. I want to say that up top because Iā€™m about to fuss and I donā€™t want it to get lost that I appreciate all you do!!

Also I am POSITIVE I am the problemā€“please help me see where Iā€™m going wrong. I am a very big card-editor (images, etc) and like having my fields in a particular order in the browser.
When itā€™s in the default layout, my search terms pick up a lot of bootcamp and sketchy titles which is 100% never what Iā€™m looking for lol. I also have to scroll to the 17th of 18 fields to see the additional resources images.

I initially changed the way itā€™s set up through the browser > card > fields window and that does exactly what Iā€™m looking for! (Which is to reorder the fields and collapse the ones I donā€™t need.)
Unfortunately as soon as I sync with Ankihub, all the changes are lost and it goes right back to putting Lecture Notes under Extra and opens all the other fields and I have to scroll down anytime I want to see the first aid images, etc.
I donā€™t remember this happening before recently. Is this something I can change and have it stay changed?

Please note: I have one million note types I think from my schoolā€™s deck that I no longer subscribe to, photo below. I donā€™t think that would be an issue here but honestly I have no clue.
I also have the anking notetype add-on and that works great for the review portion of things but from my understanding doesnā€™t have any bearing on the browser window. Please correct me if Iā€™m wrong :slight_smile:

I did and in fact that persists with syncing. I even disabled the fields here thinking they would translate to the browser window but I think Iā€™m mixed up on that part and itā€™s just for when reviewing cards.

And I did update the note types today just in case. I reset everything to default after creating a backup.

And youā€™re all set? Or still having issues?

I thought there was a connection in the add-on between the window where you edit cards and the one when reviewing/ rating cards

Can you show me what youā€™re describing, and/or what youā€™re hoping to see? Iā€™m not entirely sure Iā€™m following the description

Are you hoping to hide fields from the Browse pane? Rather than the review and/or edit panes?

Yeah sorry, itā€™s a bit of a convoluted problemā€¦feels like the anki version of a first-world problem :upside_down_face:

Iā€™ll kind of go through it step by step, just so you can tell me if itā€™s behaving in a way it shouldnā€™t OR if Iā€™m editing things in the wrong way.

My notes look like this in the browse/edit window:

I want it to look like this (fields collapsed/reordered):

The anking note types add-on has it in the order I want it to be in so I assume it doesnā€™t control the edit window settings.
So I click on the ā€œFieldsā€ window and make the changes from here:

The pop-up of course tells me that making any changes will require a full sync and I click yes.

But as soon as I sync again, those changes are lost.
It may be worth noting that it does give me this ā€˜there is a conflictā€™ pop-up twice in a row which seems odd:

I may have some bad news to impart, however. :-/

To the best of my knowledge, I donā€™t believe that there is an available functionality to achieve what youā€™ve described. Though Iā€™ve seen it requested, Iā€™m pretty sure this falls outside of the purview of AnkiHub add-on functionality and lies squarely within Anki and how it is written to display notes in the editor view. My understanding is that it has less to do with syncing, and/or AnkiHub, and it is that the collapse feature is reset upon nearly any action (including restarting Anki). The same is true of the Browse pane.

If memory serves I believe Iā€™ve seen a request for just this very feature on the official Anki forums, but ultimately Iā€™m sorry to say that Iā€™m pretty sure itā€™s a limitation with the underlying software itself rather than a modifiable aspect that can be controlled from the AnkiHub side. At the very least, Iā€™m not personally aware of any way to permanently adjust field collapsing from that screen.

Despite being the bearer of bad news, if thereā€™s anything else I can help with Iā€™d be happy to do so. I hate leaving empty-handed, so if you have any other questions or anything else with which I can be of service Iā€™m at your service. :slight_smile:

So similarly there is not a way to reorder the fields either?

The fields can be reordered, that much you can do, at least. It can be done from within the AnKing Note Types add-on settings menu:

From here, you can click-and-drag a field up, or down, to adjust the ordering of the fields. Keep in mind that, with many (most?) changes that take place at the add-on level, you may have to restart Anki before the changes fully take place and are evident.

Okay so I changed the field order in the add-on to something I donā€™t normally use so it would be evident but that didnā€™t change anything in the edit window.

But! When I opened by browse window to check, the settings I selected before (where I reordered stuff and collapsed the unused fields) did stay this time even after syncing and restarting! I have no idea how/why because itā€™s been resetting all day but for the moment it works!

Iā€™ll keep an eye out for a future add-on or option to save the settings though, I think it would be a great feature :slight_smile:
