Hi,
I know how to change the field positioning on the back template, but is there any way to change the fields positioning in the editor without it being overwritten by Ankihub after syncing?
e.g., when editing in “browse”, i want to be able to see “additional resources” before “sketchy”. so i go to fields and reposition, then press upload to ankiweb. but then i get this message and it resets. any suggestions?
Pressing skip for now every time is not the way…
I’ll help you understand how field positions work with AnkiHub. Let me search for relevant information to provide an accurate answer.

Hi there!
From what I understand, you’re trying to change the field position in the editor (the order in which fields appear when editing cards), but when you sync with AnkiHub, it’s resetting your changes.
This is a common issue with AnkiHub because the add-on maintains field definitions from the shared deck, including their order. When you’re subscribed to an AnkiHub deck, the field order is controlled by the deck creator and is synced across all subscribers.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a direct way to permanently change the field order in the editor while still keeping your AnkiHub sync intact. When you change the field positions and then sync with AnkiHub, it will detect the changes and prompt you with that warning message about “conflicting changes.”
Here are a few potential workarounds:
-
Create custom layout in your browser window: You could use Anki’s browser columns to customize how you view your cards without changing the actual field order. This won’t affect the edit screen but might help for reviewing.
-
Use field collapse feature: In Anki 2.1.45+, you can collapse fields you don’t frequently use. Click the “Fields…” button while editing a note, and for each field, you can toggle “Collapse by default” option. This way, fields you don’t need to see regularly will be collapsed, making your frequently used fields more accessible.
-
Use sticky fields: If you frequently enter information in certain fields, you can make them “sticky” by clicking the pin icon next to the field in the editor. This doesn’t change the order but can make workflow easier.
-
Skip the warning temporarily: As you’ve discovered, you can press “Skip for now,” but this is not ideal as AnkiHub will reset the field order on the next sync.
-
Contact the deck creator: If this is a shared deck, you could suggest to the deck creator to change the field order to better suit users’ needs.
If changing the field order in the editor is critical to your workflow, you might need to consider whether using AnkiHub for this particular deck is the best option for you, as field order customization is one of the limitations when using shared decks through AnkiHub.
Hello,
For that, you’ll need this add-on: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/952691989
Then, just access it through the “AnKing” option on the Anki main screen, and you will see this new menu.
Let me know if you need any more help with it!
Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately, that only seems to work for the card display order (not the editor pane). I think the bot might be right that I just can’t do it
Are you able to confirm that I should give up? lol
Oh, I’m sorry! I missed that you wanted it to work only for the browser.
Yes, that setting only changes the card display during review. Unfortunately, the only way to change the field order permanently is through that add-on.
I’m not entirely sure, but I believe the reason it doesn’t change in the browser is that the sorting order is more complex there. It isn’t ruled by the card template’s code; instead, it’s chosen in this window:
I’ve tried changing it here myself, but it always reverts after a sync.
However, you can make a feature request to have this changed here: 🥺 Feature Request - AnkiHub Community
