Buggy learn ahead feature

downloaded ankihub/anking and it caused my learning ahead feature to not work. my again interval is at 10 minutes. learn ahead is at 20 minutes. however if i hit again now, my card disappears and won’t appear after the 10 minutes pass and i have no idea why this is happening. any ideas? it only reappears when i set a study ahead custom study session. followed all other instructions but still having problems and appreciate any help. downloaded and redownloaded newest versions of anki. cleared all data and redownloaded decks. used test decks too. @AnkiHub_AI_bot

buttons work when i click manually for again, but if i use a keyboard shortcut or ankimote it won’t work even if it’s the same corresponding key

Reading: What are AnkiHub's "recommended settings"?

I understand you’re experiencing an issue with the learn ahead feature after installing AnkiHub/AnKing. Let me help troubleshoot this problem.

The Issue

When you press “Again” on a card with a 10-minute interval, the card disappears and doesn’t reappear after 10 minutes, only showing up when you create a custom study session.

Possible Explanation

This behavior is likely related to the Learn Ahead Limit setting that AnkiHub modifies when you use its “recommended settings”. According to AnkiHub’s documentation, their recommended settings change the Learn Ahead Limit from the default 20 minutes to 0 minutes.

When the Learn Ahead Limit is set to 0, Anki will strictly wait for the full delay to pass before showing learning cards again, instead of showing them early when there’s nothing else to study.

How to Fix This

You’ll need to adjust your Learn Ahead Limit in Anki’s preferences:

  1. Open Anki
  2. Go to Tools → Preferences (or press Ctrl+P)
  3. Click on the Review tab
  4. Find the Learn ahead limit setting
  5. Change it back to 20 minutes (or your preferred value)
  6. Click Save

This should restore the behavior you’re expecting, where cards will show up again after their scheduled time if there’s nothing else to study.

Why This Happens

AnkiHub’s recommended settings change the Learn Ahead Limit to 0 to ensure cards appear exactly at their scheduled times. While this can provide more precise spacing, it also means cards won’t appear until their full delay has passed, which can be confusing if you’re used to Anki’s default behavior.

Let me know if adjusting this setting resolves your issue!

Reading: Adjusting the Learn Ahead Limit

I’m sorry to hear you’re having issues with the learn ahead feature after installing AnkiHub. Let me help troubleshoot this problem.

Based on your description, it sounds like your learning cards are disappearing after pressing “Again” and not reappearing when they should (after 10 minutes).

Possible Causes and Solutions:

  1. Preferences Setting Issue:
The learn ahead limit setting controls when Anki shows cards that aren’t quite due yet. Your setting of 20 minutes should be working with a 10-minute “Again” interval.

  2. Card Scheduling:
The AnkiHub add-on shouldn’t interfere with Anki’s core scheduling functionality, but there might be some unexpected interaction.

  3. Filtered Decks:
Sometimes when cards are returned to their original decks from filtered decks, scheduling can be affected.

Try These Steps:

  1. Verify Learn Ahead Setting:

  2. Check Day Boundary Setting:

    • In Preferences, check “Next day starts at”
    • If this is set oddly, it could affect card scheduling
  3. Test Without Add-ons:

    • Temporarily disable AnkiHub add-on to see if the problem persists
    • In Anki, go to Tools → Add-ons → Select AnkiHub → Toggle “Enabled”
    • Restart Anki and test if learning cards reappear properly
  4. Check for Buried Cards:

    • Go to the Browser (B key)
    • Search for “is:learn” to see if your learning cards are there
    • Cards might be accidentally buried or suspended
  5. Recreate Scheduler Database:

    • Backup your collection first!
    • Tools → Preferences → Backups → Create backup now
    • Then Tools → Check Database

If these steps don’t resolve the issue, please let us know what happens when you try them, so we can provide more specific help.

Hello,

I would be happy to help.

The ‘learn ahead limit’ can be adjusted fairly easily: Adjusting the Learn Ahead Limit

This sounds like it may be a separate issue, likely related to another add-on perhaps?

It sounds like you’re dealing with two separate issues:

  1. Learning cards disappearing after using “Again”
  2. Keyboard shortcuts not working properly for the “Again” button

Let me address both issues:

Issue 1: Learn Ahead Feature and Disappearing Cards

This is likely related to Anki’s “Learn ahead limit” setting. When AnkiHub’s recommended settings are applied, this is changed from the default 20 minutes to 0 minutes, which means cards won’t be shown early, even if there’s nothing else to study.

To fix this:

  1. Go to Anki → Preferences → Review tab
  2. Find “Learn ahead limit”
  3. Change it back to 20 minutes (or your preferred value)
  4. Click Save

This should make your learning cards reappear after their due time.

Issue 2: Keyboard Shortcuts Not Working

This issue where “keyboard shortcut or Ankimote” works differently than manual clicks suggests:

  1. Add-on Conflict: Another add-on may be intercepting your keyboard shortcuts
  2. Ankimote Configuration: Your Ankimote app might need reconfiguration

Troubleshooting steps:

  1. Test in Safe Mode:

    • Restart Anki while holding the Shift key
    • This temporarily disables all add-ons
    • Test if keyboard shortcuts work properly
  2. Check for Add-on Conflicts:

    • If shortcuts work in safe mode, gradually enable add-ons to identify the conflicting one
    • Pay special attention to add-ons that modify keyboard functionality
  3. Ankimote Settings:

    • Make sure Ankimote is properly configured
    • Try resetting its connection/settings

Let me know if adjusting the learn ahead limit resolves your first issue, and which add-ons you have installed if you’re still having problems with keyboard shortcuts.

Hi Brian, thanks for the response.

here are my list of add ons, it doesn’t seem like that should affect response input/output? what do you think

Add-ons, especially for remotes and the like, do function specifically by affecting response input/output so it’s very possible

The easiest solution to troubleshoot would be to disable all of your add-ons, restart Anki, and see if the issue persists with add-ons disabled.

That, at the very least, will tell us if the issue stems from one of your add-ons or not. And then we can go from there.

Complementing Brian’s answer:

Keep in mind that the Learn Ahead feature only takes effect when there are no more cards left to study—except for the one you’re expecting it to trigger on. You can read the official documentation on how it works here: Learn Ahead - Anki Documentation

Hi Marcos and Brian,

The issue is still persisting even with the add-ons disabled :frowning: I tested this on a small deck to see if the cards would reappear in the red column after all cards have been reviewed, but this was not the case and even though the again time interval passed, the cards didn’t appear either.

@MarcosZan @Brian_BH I also tried again in safe mode and the problem is still persisting

What is your again interval? and what did you set your learn ahead limit to?

Let’s try to solve one issue at a time; and first we’ll work on your intervals:

First, can you bring up an image of a card that is up for review (and, ideally, that you have reviewed at least once before) and show me the answer options/intervals at the bottom of your screen just so I can see what you’re seeing?

Second, for that same card, can you click on ‘info’ and show me the resulting screen for that card:

Third, for the same deck that the card is from can you go to deck options here:

In particular, I’d like to see what values you have set for your learning and relearning steps, as here:

Fourth, can you let us know what value you set your Learn Ahead Limit to? Just to make sure.

Given all of that info we can try to get a better idea of what’s going on, and what the possible solutions may be.
