I see you’re having trouble turning off bionic reading in AnkiHub. Bionic reading is a feature that highlights certain parts of text to improve reading speed and comprehension.
Could you please provide more details about your issue? Specifically:
Are you seeing bionic reading formatting in AnkiHub’s interface or in specific cards?
Which platform are you using (desktop, mobile)?
Could you share a screenshot showing what you’re experiencing?
This information would help me provide more targeted assistance.
Also, if this is related to a specific deck you’re using, you might want to ask about it in the AnkiHub Decks category instead, as mentioned in the guidelines.
Thanks for providing those details. If bionic reading is affecting all of your cards but isn’t showing up in your add-ons list, this might be related to a few possible causes:
Night mode or theme settings: Sometimes display settings can cause text formatting to appear differently. Try checking your Anki preferences under Tools > Preferences > Appearance.
Add-on issue: Even if you don’t see a specific “bionic reading” add-on, another add-on might be causing this effect. Try restarting Anki while holding down the Shift key - this temporarily disables all add-ons. If the bionic reading format disappears, then an add-on is the cause.
Card template modification: The card templates might have been modified to include bionic reading-style formatting. You can check this by viewing the card templates in the browser (select a note, then click Cards…).
To troubleshoot further:
Could you share a screenshot of what you’re seeing?
Try restarting Anki completely
Try the Shift+Start method to disable add-ons temporarily
If these suggestions don’t help, this might be a general Anki issue rather than an AnkiHub-specific one. In that case, you might get better help at the Anki Support Forum.
Thank you for sharing the screenshot. I can see the bionic reading-style formatting (where parts of words are bold) on your cards.
Yes, “force quit” on a MacBook is one way to restart Anki. After force quitting:
Wait a few seconds
Open Anki again
To properly test if an add-on is causing this issue, try this specific troubleshooting method:
Close Anki completely
Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard
While still holding Shift, open Anki
Keep holding Shift until Anki has fully launched
This temporarily disables all add-ons. If the bold formatting disappears, then we know an add-on is causing it.
Since this appears to be affecting all your cards, it’s likely either:
An add-on that’s modifying how text displays
A setting in Anki preferences
A font rendering issue
If the Shift+Start method doesn’t fix it, you could try:
Going to Tools > Check Database to ensure your collection is intact
Checking your Anki preferences under Tools > Preferences > Appearance
Restarting your computer completely
If none of these solutions work, this might be a general Anki issue rather than AnkiHub-specific. The Anki Support Forum might have additional resources for this particular text formatting problem.
I’m sorry to hear that the previous suggestions didn’t resolve your issue. Since we’ve eliminated add-ons and basic Anki settings as the cause, let’s try some more advanced troubleshooting:
Check your video driver settings:
Go to Tools > Preferences
Under the “Appearance” tab, try changing the “Video driver” setting (try each option: Software, ANGLE, or OpenGL)
Restart Anki after each change to see if it makes a difference
Debug console check:
Press Ctrl+Shift+; (Command+Shift+; on Mac) to open the debug console
Type the following and press Enter:
mw.reviewer.web.eval("document.body.innerHTML")
Check if there are any unusual HTML tags or CSS classes that might be causing the bold formatting
Reset Anki’s user interface:
Go to Tools > Preferences > Appearance
Click “Reset Window Sizes”
Check your Anki version:
Make sure you’re using the latest version of Anki (Help > About or Anki > About)
If not, try updating to see if that resolves the issue
Since this appears to be affecting the text rendering across all your cards, and we’ve ruled out most AnkiHub-specific causes, this might be a core Anki issue.
Include details of all troubleshooting steps you’ve already tried
The Anki development team or the wider community there might have encountered similar font rendering issues and could provide more specialized assistance.
I saw that the bot already suggested it to you, but can you please try again to hold Shift while starting Anki? If you do it correctly, your add-ons (like the AnkiHub tab on the Anki main page) should be gone.
To disable this add-on’s function, you need to disable it on each note type in the add-on config. Toggling the add-on off alone will not turn off the bionic reading formatting
Can you try this and let me know how it goes?
Also, can you please provide the name/code of the Bionic Reading add-on that you had? Maybe it’s a different one.
It seems like the bionic reading was applied permanently to all my cards. I tried holding shift while restarting Anki and the bionic reading was still there. What would be the next steps to try to remove this? I did not have this add on installed at any point. Thank you!

Could you please look in your installed add-on list? Maybe it was installed together with other add-ons.
