Changing ownership of a deck after it is uploaded to ankihub

Hi,

I am currently working on a radiation oncology deck that I would like to eventually share to Ankihub so it can be updated and shared forever. However, I did not purchase a lifetime AnkiHub membership and my current subscription will end in a few months.

Is there a way to transfer ownership of the deck to someone else after I upload to Ankihub? Meaning someone else would be responsible for accepting/rejecting suggested edits and what not?

Thanks so much!

Yes, you can effectively hand off “ownership” of a collaborative AnkiHub deck, even if the original owner’s subscription ends, but there are a few important details to plan for.

1. Who can manage suggestions?

On AnkiHub, the deck owner and any maintainers can:

  • Review and accept/reject suggested edits
  • Manage deck settings (depending on their role)

So you have two main options:

Option A: Add a maintainer now

Before your subscription ends:

  1. Upload the deck to AnkiHub under your account.
  2. Invite one or more trusted collaborators as maintainers on the deck.
  3. Let them handle suggested edits and long‑term maintenance.

Even if you’re less active later, maintainers can keep the deck updated. This is usually the smoothest approach.

Option B: New owner uploads / forks the deck

If you want a different person to fully “own” the deck:

  1. You can share the deck file with them and let them upload it to AnkiHub as the main owner.
  2. You then join as a regular subscriber/maintainer (optional).

This is more like a clean transfer of ownership, but it does mean a new AnkiHub deck entry.

2. What happens when your subscription ends?

From what I’m aware of (and this can change, so it’s good to confirm with staff):

  • The deck itself and its collaborators don’t vanish just because your subscription ends.
  • However, your ability to manage certain aspects may be limited if you no longer have an active membership.
  • That’s why setting up maintainers in advance is the safest way to ensure the deck is “updated and shared forever” without relying on your own subscription.

3. Can support fully reassign deck ownership?

I didn’t find an explicit forum post confirming that staff can “reassign” the owner field from one user to another on the same deck. That might be possible on the backend, but it’s not a standard user-facing feature that’s clearly documented.

Because of that, I’d recommend:

  • Tagging staff in your topic (e.g., @AnkiHubSupport or the relevant group if visible to you), or
  • Opening a support ticket via the main AnkiHub site, linking this topic, and asking specifically:

“Can you transfer ownership of Deck X from user A to user B, or should we instead upload under the new owner and set maintainers?”

If you’d like, you can reply here with the name/AnkiHub username of the future maintainer/owner you have in mind, and I can suggest the exact steps you both should take (who uploads, who gets maintainer roles, timing before your subscription ends, etc.).

Hello,

I would be happy to help.

Yes, it is generally possible to hand off maintainer privileges and/or ownership of a deck to someone else. If you are the owner of the deck, and would like to pass that off to another user, we can take care of that for you on our end, provided you have the person in mind (username, etc.).
