Transferring Ankihub Deck Ownership

So I created a deck back in 2023 for my medical school’s pre-clerkship curriculum. We have since expanded the deck with new maintainers being added each year so the deck can be continually updated for years to come. One thing that I haven’t figured out yet though, is how to transfer deck ownership. I am now in clinicals, but still need to personally add new maintainers as the new M1s who were elected as their classes’ Anki Czars (deck maintainers for their class) are unable to do so.

Not a huge issue right now, but as I transition into residency in the future, I’d like to not have to be involved with this deck. Is there any way to fully transfer ownership of a deck on Ankihub to another individual? And if not, is this a feature that would be feasible to add? I assume I’m not the only one who has or will run into this issue, so I wanted to ask.

I’ll help you with your question about transferring AnkiHub deck ownership. Let me search for relevant information about this topic.

Hi Rahim,

Thanks for your question about transferring deck ownership in AnkiHub. Currently, AnkiHub doesn’t have a direct feature to completely transfer ownership of a deck from one user to another. As the original creator of the deck, you remain the primary owner.

However, you can add other users as maintainers who can help manage the deck. As maintainers, they’ll be able to:

  • Accept or reject changes suggested by subscribers
  • Make their own edits to cards
  • Add new cards to the deck
  • Manage tags

To add new maintainers to your deck:

  1. Go to the AnkiHub web app
  2. Navigate to your deck
  3. Click on “Manage Maintainers”
  4. Add the email or username of the person you want to add as a maintainer

You can follow this tutorial for the exact steps: How to Add a Maintainer to a Deck

Regarding full ownership transfer, this would be a valuable feature to request. You’re certainly not the only one facing this situation with educational resources that need to be passed down to new cohorts. I

Great, yeah the issue itself is with transferring full ownership of the deck as currently I am the only one who can add other maintainers. Other option would be to allow the deck creator to designate other maintainers to be able to add and remove maintainers. Either would be a solution for this issue for me, although more broadly I think both features would be helpful to add.

I need to search for more specific information about transferring full ownership in AnkiHub.

Hi Rahim,

You’ve raised an important question about transferring deck ownership in AnkiHub. This is definitely a valuable feature request that would benefit many educators in situations similar to yours.

Currently, AnkiHub doesn’t have a direct feature to completely transfer ownership of a deck from one creator to another. As the original creator, you remain the primary owner and the only one who can add other maintainers.

Your suggestion of either:

  1. Full ownership transfer, or
  2. Allowing the creator to designate other maintainers who can add/remove maintainers

Both would be excellent solutions to this issue. Many educational institutions face this exact challenge when course materials need to be handed down to new cohorts as students graduate.

While this feature isn’t currently available, I recommend submitting this as a feature request directly to the AnkiHub team at support@ankihub.net. They’re generally responsive to user needs, especially ones that affect educational workflows.

In the meantime, you’ll need to continue adding new maintainers yourself. At least the maintainers you add can help with all other aspects of deck management:

  • Accepting/rejecting changes
  • Making edits
  • Adding new cards
  • Managing tags

The How to Add a Maintainer to a Deck tutorial shows the current process for adding maintainers.

Would you like any more specific information about maintainer capabilities while we wait for a potential ownership transfer feature?

Hi @rahimburdette ,

Yes, we can transfer deck ownership from our end. There’s two options

A) You transfer ownership of the deck to another user, they will become the new owner/creator of the deck and will have all the permissions that a deck creator would have

B) You remain the owner of the deck and you can designate certain individuals that can ask us who they want to add as maintainers and we can add them on our end

Okay, that sounds great. I suppose my only thought would be that it would be great to build both of these features into AnkiHub sometime in the future, so that deck creators/maintainers have more flexibility. I suspect UVA is not the only medical school that has begun using AnkiHub to create decks intended to be used by the entire class during pre-clinicals, and thus, this would be great to add sometime in the future if possible!
