Compatibility of AnkiHub’s “Recommended Settings” with FSRS

Hey everyone,

I have a quick question regarding the “recommended settings” introduced with the March-May 2024 update (v.gd - Shortened URL).

I noticed the screenshot Andrew shared (v.gd - Shortened URL) shows learning steps of 15 minutes and 1 day, with FSRS not enabled.

After watching Nick’s video on FSRS and skimming through Jarrett Ye’s GitHub on the topic, it seems that when FSRS is enabled, steps of 1 day or more are generally not recommended (which aligns with the warning message that appears in Anki’s deck settings when attempting to set such steps).

My question is: are these recommended settings primarily intended for users sticking with SM-2, or were they deliberately designed with FSRS users in mind as well?

Thank you very much for your help!

These were primarily designed for SM-2 I believe. But we want to shift towards having FSRS as the default which means we should remove the “1d” recommended setting

That’s correct, to my understanding. As I understand it, FSRS is not the default and, while it is preferred, there hasn’t yet been a decision to toggle it on for new users. Thus, the recommended learning steps will probably require some updating when and where FSRS becomes the recommended default as they reflect older recommendations.

Thank you both for your insights! It’s good to know that some tweaking may be necessary for FSRS users to get the best results.

@abdo.nh , does this conflict with how AnkiHub deck options are configured? Do we only change deck options for the step deck? I think the new advice regarding FSRS conflicts with how we are configuring deck options with the Butler add-on.

So the difference between AnkiHub and Butler here is that AnkiHub doesn’t set FSRS-specific steps. Butler asks the user whether they prefer FSRS and sets the steps to 15m accordingly. We can make it so that AnkiHub checks whether FSRS is enabled and adjusts the steps. I can send a quick PR - it’s a simple change.
