Finished Miledown + 75% through Pankow and want to switch to AnKing

Hi! I finished the Miledown deck separated by kaplan chapters and I am almost done with Pankow. I am thinking of switching to Anking but am worried about losing all of that progress. Do I download Anking and delete the old decks? Will I have to restart the progress I have made? Pankow takes really long to get through so that is my main concern. I am sure someone has had this issue before I am just struggling to find the right posts in community.

Thanks!

You won’t lose your work, but how much carries over depends on how you handle the switch and how similar the cards are between decks.

Here are the main options, with what I’d recommend for someone far into MileDown + Pankow:

1. Add AnKing as a new deck (recommended)

What happens to your current progress?

  • Your reviews and scheduling on MileDown + Pankow stay exactly as they are.
  • AnKing is added on top; nothing is deleted or reset unless you choose to.

How to do it (high‑level):

  1. Back up first

    • In Anki: File → Export → Standard Anki Collection Package (*.colpkg) and save it somewhere safe.
  2. Install AnkiHub + subscribe to AnKing deck

    • Install the AnkiHub add‑on (if you haven’t already).
    • On AnkiHub, subscribe to the AnKing Overhaul deck.
    • Sync to Anki and let it download.
  3. Keep your old decks for now

    • Do not delete MileDown or Pankow yet.
    • You can:
      • Keep reviewing them to finish key sections, or
      • Gradually suspend cards you feel are now duplicated in AnKing once you’re comfortable.
  4. Prioritize AnKing going forward

    • Start learning new material primarily from AnKing.
    • Over a few weeks, you can:
      • Suspend overlapping MileDown/Pankow cards you recognize in AnKing.
      • Optionally suspend unused subdecks in MileDown/Pankow to reduce review load.

Pros:

  • Zero risk of losing current review history.
  • You can transition slowly instead of restarting everything.
  • Safest approach if you’re anxious about Pankow’s long progress.

Cons:

  • You may see some duplicate content until you manually suspend overlapping cards.

2. Try to “map” progress (more advanced, often not worth it)

Because MileDown/Pankow and AnKing use different note types and card IDs, Anki can’t automatically transfer:

  • ease, interval, due dates
  • young/mature status, etc.

There are some workflows where people:

  • Export specific tags from MileDown/Pankow
  • Import/merge into AnKing note types
  • Or manually remap fields

…but this is fiddly, not officially supported by AnkiHub, and easy to mess up. Given where you are, it’s usually better to keep your old decks intact and move forward with AnKing, rather than trying to reconstruct identical progress.

3. Deleting the old decks

I’d only recommend deleting MileDown/Pankow when:

  • You’ve been using AnKing exclusively for a while and
  • You’re sure you don’t want to go back.

Important: Deleting your old decks will permanently remove those review histories. That’s fine if you’ve already transitioned and don’t care about them anymore—but don’t rush this step.

Concrete suggestion for you

Given that:

  • You finished MileDown (by Kaplan chapters), and
  • You’re ~75% through Pankow and worried about losing that time,

I’d suggest:

  1. Add AnKing via AnkiHub as a new deck. Don’t delete anything.
  2. Use AnKing as your main source moving forward.
  3. Over 1–2 weeks:
    • If you see cards in Pankow that clearly overlap with what you’re seeing in AnKing, suspend them in Pankow.
  4. Once you’re comfortable that AnKing covers everything you need, then consider slowly retiring or deleting the old decks (after another backup).

If you tell me:

  • Which year/exam you’re targetting (e.g., MCAT date), and
  • Roughly how many reviews/day you’re doing now,

I can help you sketch a more tailored transition plan (e.g., which subdecks to prioritize, how aggressively to suspend Pankow/MileDown, etc.).

Hello,

I would be happy to help.

You don’t have to worry about losing your progress, as the system is designed so that folks can update without losing any of your current review history.

If you want to preserve your review history, you won’t want to delete your old decks. You can download the AnKing Step deck, any cards held in common will update in place, and then you can opt to do whatever you like with your local collection from there

Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.
