How do we manage our preferences before syncing with anking?

how do we manage our preferences regardnig syncing with the anking again? I remember myself doing this before, but forgot how I did it. I remember we can go online, and click on boxes regarding what can be updated and what cannot be updated when we click on “syncing with ankihub” (e.g., sync the media, but not the notes).

You’re thinking of the AnkiHub sync preferences (what AnkiHub is allowed to change vs what stays local), not the basic Anki “Sync” button.

Here’s how to get back to that screen and what you can control:

  1. Open Anki → Tools → Add-ons → AnkiHub → Config (or “Config / Preferences”)
  2. In the AnkiHub settings, look for options like:
    • Protect my scheduling (so AnkiHub doesn’t change your intervals/due dates)
    • Protect my edits (so AnkiHub doesn’t overwrite your personal field edits)
    • What to sync:
      • Notes / fields
      • Media (images, audio, etc.)
      • Tags
  3. Check or uncheck the boxes according to what you want:
    • To sync media but not note content, keep media enabled and enable “protect edits” (and/or disable syncing for certain fields if available in your version).
    • To avoid scheduling changes, turn on “protect scheduling”.

There isn’t a separate website page just for “what gets updated” per deck; it’s controlled primarily via the Anki add-on configuration and, for some decks (like the AnKing Step Deck), via protect edits/scheduling options.

If you can share a screenshot of what you remember (or which options you’d like to lock vs sync—media, text fields, tags, scheduling), I can walk you through the exact checkboxes to use.

Hello,

I would be happy to help.

Just to make sure: do you mean the AnKing Step deck?

From your description, it sounds like you’re referencing protecting fields, yeah? If so, this tutorial can walk you through how to go about that: Managing Protected Fields

Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.

Thank you!!!

I actually don’t find the “protect my edits” option in anking.

You’re right to be confused here—there is not a literal checkbox called “Protect my edits” inside the AnKing Step Deck itself.

There are two different “protect” concepts people mix up:

1. AnkiHub Add-on Settings (General Protection)

In Anki, go to:

Tools → Add-ons → AnkiHub → Config

Depending on your version, you’ll see options like:

  • Protect scheduling – prevents AnkiHub from changing your due dates/intervals
  • Sometimes: Do not overwrite local changes or similar wording for notes/fields

These are global AnkiHub behaviors, not per-deck buttons labeled “Protect my edits.”

2. Per-field / Per-card Protection (What Brian linked)

The tutorial Brian linked shows how to protect fields or notes so that your local changes aren’t overwritten by AnkiHub. This is done by:

  • Using the AnkiHub add-on’s field protection features (right-click card(s) → AnkiHub → Protect… or similar, depending on version), not by a big “Protect my edits” toggle inside the AnKing deck.

The wording in the UI may be something like:

  • Protect note
  • Protect fields
  • Do not sync this field, etc.

What to do next

  1. Open Anki → Tools → Add-ons → AnkiHub → Config and tell us:
    • What options you see under sync/protection.
  2. On a card from the AnKing Step Deck, try:
    • Right‑click the card in the Browser and look for an AnkiHub submenu (e.g., “Protect…” / “Do not sync field”),
    • Or check the “AnkiHub” menu at the top bar if present.

If you can share a screenshot of:

  • Your AnkiHub config window, and
  • The right‑click / AnkiHub menu on a Step deck card,

I can point out exactly which options to use to “sync media but not overwrite my text edits.”

There isn’t a ‘protect my edits’ option, really

If you’re trying to protect a field, the above tutorial can walk you through how to do that ( Managing Protected Fields)

I see! thanks! This is resolved!
