I am new to Anki. I am using the MCAT Anking deck. I am reaching out to ask how to make modifications to my cards without losing my modifications when I sync with Ankihub. I think there is an explanation for that, but I really did not understand the process well.

You’re right to think about this early—how you edit cards matters when you’re syncing with a shared deck like the MCAT AnKing deck.
1. How AnkiHub handles your edits
AnkiHub uses protected fields so that your personal notes aren’t overwritten when you sync updates from the shared deck.
For the AnKing-style decks, AnkiHub automatically protects fields like:
Lecture Notes
Missed Questions
Pathoma
Boards and Beyond
First Aid
Additional Resources
Physeo
Anything you add or change in those fields will stay yours even after syncing.
By default it does NOT protect:
Text
Extra
Sketchy
Pixorize
Changes you make in unprotected fields can be overwritten if the deck author changes that same field.
2. What you should do in practice
Put your personal notes in protected fields.
For example, add your own explanations, mnemonics, and lecture content into Lecture Notes or Missed Questions, not into Text/Extra.
Avoid heavy editing of “Text” and “Extra” if you want to benefit from future updates (bug fixes, better wording, etc.).
For example: “I want to add my own explanation under the answer” or “I want to add MCAT-specific notes,” I can suggest exactly which fields in your MCAT AnKing deck to use so they’re safe with AnkiHub syncing.
In order to be able to make edits and not have them overwritten, you would want to protect a given field. There is an inherent trade-off here, though, in that protecting a field also prevents AnkiHub from being able to write to that field, meaning you won’t be able to receive updates for that field
For that reason, it is generally recommended to make edits to the Personal Notes and Missed Questions fields, which are protected by default and are not edited by AnkiHub as a rule
