Hoping to delete step 1 cards to free up space on my phone as I am having trouble syncing the app since my phone has so little storage. I have seem many times online it recommended to do “tag:#AK_Step1_v12 - tag:#AK_Step2_v12” but this is not working for me. Does anyone has suggestions as to why this isn’t working and how I can go about selecting the cards that are only for step 1, not step 2?

How to Delete Step 1 Cards from the AnKing Deck
I understand you’re trying to free up space on your phone by removing Step 1 cards from the AnKing Deck. The search syntax you mentioned isn’t working correctly, so let me help you with the proper way to do this.
Correct Search Syntax
To filter for Step 1 cards only (not Step 2), you should use:
tag:AK_Step1_v12 -tag:AK_Step2_v12
This search finds all cards tagged with Step 1 that are NOT also tagged with Step 2.
Steps to Delete These Cards:
- Open Anki on your device
- Click on the “Browse” button
- In the search bar, enter:
tag:AK_Step1_v12 -tag:AK_Step2_v12
- Select all cards in the search results (Ctrl+A or Cmd+A)
- Right-click and select “Delete” (or press Delete key)
Why Your Original Search Didn’t Work
The syntax you were using (tag:#AK_Step1_v12 - tag:#AK_Step2_v12
) has two issues:
- The # symbol should not be included in tag searches in Anki
- There should be no space between the minus sign and “tag:”
Alternative Approach
If you’re concerned about accidentally deleting cards you might need later, you could instead:
- Create a filtered deck using the same search terms
- Study only the Step 2 cards, which would be fewer in number
- This preserves your collection while focusing on what you need
According to the AnKing wiki, Step 1 and Step 2 tags are carefully organized to help users distinguish between the content for different exams.

tag:AK_Step1_v12 -tag:AK_Step2_v12 is also not working
I understand that the search syntax I suggested isn’t working for you. Let’s try a different approach to identify and delete your Step 1 cards.
Alternative Search Approaches
Try these different search queries in the Browse screen:
- First, make sure you’re using the correct tag structure:
tag:"AK_Step1_v12" -tag:"AK_Step2_v12"
(With quotes around the tag names)
- If that doesn’t work, try:
"tag:AK_Step1_v12" -"tag:AK_Step2_v12"
- You can also try using the sidebar in Anki’s browser (available in Anki 2.1.45+):
- Open the Browse screen
- Look at the left sidebar
- Find and click on the “AK_Step1_v12” tag
- Hold Ctrl+Shift while clicking on “AK_Step2_v12” to exclude it from your search
Using Filtered Decks
If direct deletion is challenging, create a filtered deck to identify these cards:
- Go to Tools → Create Filtered Deck
- In the search box, enter:
tag:AK_Step1_v12 -tag:AK_Step2_v12
- Set a high limit (like 100,000) to include all matching cards
- Create the deck
- Browse this filtered deck to see if it contains the cards you want to delete
Check Your Tag Structure
It’s possible your AnKing deck uses a slightly different tag structure. To verify:
- Open the Browse screen
- Click on “Tags” in the sidebar
- Look for tags that include “Step1” or similar
- Use the exact tag names you see in your search
If you’re still having trouble, please let me know what tags you see in your AnKing deck so I can provide more specific guidance.
