I tried clicking on anking step1 and step2 haul deck and it says a huge number, which sounds like both step 1 and step2 content. How do I know how many cards are in only step1 content?
I’ll help you find information about checking the number of Step 1 cards in the AnKing deck. Let me search for relevant information in the community forum.

Let me help you figure out the Step 1 card count in the AnKing deck!
To see how many Step 1 cards are in the AnKing deck without creating a separate deck, you can use Anki’s browser and filter by tags. The AnKing Step Deck combines both Step 1 and Step 2 content, which is why you’re seeing a large total number.
Here’s how to check specifically for Step 1 cards:
- Open Anki
- Click on Browse (or press B)
- In the left sidebar, select your AnKing deck
- In the search bar at the top, type:
tag:step1ortag:#AK_Step1
This will filter the cards to show only those tagged for Step 1 content. The number of cards matching this search will appear at the bottom of the browser window.
Note that there’s a distinction between notes and cards in Anki, as explained in one of our community posts:
There are roughly 28,800 notes in the entire AnKing deck, but around 35,000 cards. This difference occurs because one note can produce multiple cards (for example, cloze deletions).
For Step 1 specifically, you won’t need to create a separate deck - just use the tags to filter when you want to study only Step 1 content.
If you want to study only Step 1 cards while remaining in the main deck, you can:
- Create a filtered deck (Tools → Create Filtered Deck)
- Use the search term
tag:step1ortag:#AK_Step1 - Set up your study parameters and click “Build”
Would you like more specific information about studying Step 1 content within the AnKing deck?
Hello,
I would be happy to help. ![]()
You can click on the step 1 tag, then option+command+click on the step 2 tag. This will show you cards that are tagged by Step 1, and that are not tagged by Step 2.
Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with. ![]()
Thank you! When I do that it shows 9k cards but my current deck using cards tagged with step1_v12 has near 11k cards unsuspended. Why do you think that’s the case?
Hard to say. If you’re using tags, those numbers will be more reliable. If you’re going based on what’s in a given deck, it’s much harder to know since I don’t know how you have your decks organized
The simplest explanation would be that you have cards moved around in one way or another that doesn’t entirely line up with the tags. That would be my first hunch
That makes sense. Sorry last question: this post says there are 29,215 cards for step1 in anking but I only got 9k when I did the option+command+click technique you mentioned above. I’m kind of confused on which one is the more correct answer
Hello,
This post refers to the total number of cards tagged for Step 1, which currently amounts to almost 32,000 cards.
The 9,000 cards you’re referring to are those tagged for Step 1 but not for Step 2. A lot of Step 1 content is also relevant for Step 2, which is why there’s overlap. Which is what you were looking for:
So, if you want cards that only apply to Step 1 (and not Step 2), you can do what Mr. Brian suggested. But if you want any card that could be useful for Step 1, you can use the main tag #AK_Step1_v12.
You can also explore its subtags to see if any of them better match your needs — they’re generally more specific:

That’s perfect, Mr. Brian and MarcosZan! Sorry for the questions. I’m prepping to countdown for step1 so wanted to be extra careful that I’m not misunderstanding anything. Thank you both for being patient and thoroughly explaining.

Thank you! One follow-up question. Do the cards that only apply to step 1 (9K) cover all of the material relevant to step1, or is it the 32k cards that cover all of it? I’m guessing it’s the latter but just double checking
It is technically all of it, since many Step 1 cards overlap with Step 2 concepts, however its not recommended to do all 32k cards. It is recommended to pick a couple of resources and do the cards that are tagged specifically for that resource and supplement with doing questions
That makes a lot of sense lol. Thank you
