How to get sub decks back?

With this new update, I can no longer have the option to see the subdecks, which i found easier to use when unsuspending cards. Is there a way to revert back to the subdeck layout while still receiving the AnKing updates?

Hello,

You can still have subdecks if you prefer them, they are just not included by default as they are not convenient for everyone.

You can use the ‘create deck’ button on the main page of Anki here:

In this way you can create decks, and/or subdecks, and move cards around based on your personal preference. I can walk you through the process if you prefer.

Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply. I’m guessing based on your response that my only option to get the subdecks back is if I personally move the cards into subdecks, and there’s no option to just get the old set up back?

The Step Deck hasn’t used subdecks for quite a long time, for a number of reasons.

In part because not everyone wants them, or necessarily is a given division of subdecks useful for all users. For that reason, tags have become the preferred method of organization for a few years now.

But, you can of course shuffle the cards around as you please. Only takes a couple of minutes, at most. I’d be happy to walk you through the process if it would be helpful?

Yes please, I’d appreciate the help. I wasn’t aware that subdecks havent been used in the Step deck for a while, I just noticed it had disappeared a few days ago

I got you.

I’ll do a random example here, though it should work for any permutation you’re hoping to follow.

From your main Anki screen there is a button at the bottom that says ‘create deck’. Click that, and title it whatever you like. Say, ‘cardio’:

Create whichever decks you like, in whatever organization or subject grouping you like.

From there, go to your Browse screen and you should have some Step Deck-specific tags:

In this example, I’m going to move over the cards related to Step 1 and Cardio.

Select the tag you want:

From there, hit command+A and it should select all of the cards associated with that tag. Then, right-click one of the cards, select ‘change deck’ and send them on over to the deck of your choice:

This is just a random example. You can organize by topic, by exam, by class, or by any random assortment of collections that you want. It’s all personal preference, really.

Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.

Hello,

I think I was using the wrong terminology. What I’m actually looking for is how the tags are ordered in sub categories on the left hand side like in the second and third picture from your latest response (I thought how the tags were arranged was called sub decks).

For some reason, after a recent update, I can’t see the tags arranged on the left hand side when I go into my Browse screen. I just added the cardio subdeck (when I was following your instructions), however, for the last few days all that I can see is just the instructions subdeck on the left hand side and that’s it

It looks like you’re looking in the ‘decks’ section:

If you’re looking for tags, they are a bit lower:

oh wow! I definitely feel a bit dumb for not catching that. Thanks for your help and patience!
