Thanks for posting and welcome to AnkiHub!

It looks like you may have accidentally pasted the template text for the “:person_raising_hand: Support” category instead of describing your actual issue.

To help you with your DeckStream not updating, please reply with:

  1. What exactly is happening?

    • Are you seeing “No updates available”?
    • Is there an error message? If yes, what does it say?
    • Is the DeckStream icon showing as “Connected” or something else?
  2. Basic info:

    • Your operating system (Windows/Mac/Linux).
    • Anki version (e.g. 23.12).
    • AnkiHub add-on version (from Anki: Tools → Add-ons → AnkiHub → View Files and check meta.json, or just screenshot the add-on list).
    • Which deck/DeckStream you’re trying to update (name and, if possible, a link to the AnkiHub deck page).
  3. What you’ve already tried:

    • Restart Anki?
    • AnkiHub → Sync Decks/DeckStreams from the Anki menu?
    • Disabled other add-ons and tried again?

If you can, please also add:

  • A screenshot of:
    • The DeckStream page on AnkiHub (showing that there is a newer version).
    • The AnkiHub add-on window in Anki after you click AnkiHub → Sync Decks/DeckStreams.

Once you share those details, we can narrow down whether it’s:

  • A version mismatch (older Anki or AnkiHub add-on).
  • A connection/authentication issue.
  • A problem specific to that particular DeckStream.

Thanks for the detailed traceback—that helps a lot.

This error is happening while Anki is trying to install or update an add-on (ID 678942895), not specifically while updating a DeckStream. Anki is trying to back up that add‑on’s user_files folder and Windows is blocking it:

PermissionError: [WinError 5] Access is denied ... 'addons21\\678942895\\user_files' -> 'addons21\\files_backup'

When that fails, it can prevent the AnkiHub add-on from installing/updating correctly, which in turn can break DeckStream sync.

Step 1 – Fully close Anki

  1. Close Anki.
  2. Make sure it’s not still running in the tray (right‑click → Exit, or check Task Manager and end any anki.exe).

Step 2 – Fix Windows permissions on the Anki folder

  1. In File Explorer go to:
    C:\Users\calle\AppData\Roaming\

(You may need to enable “Hidden items” in the View menu.)
  2. Right‑click the Anki2 folder → Properties → Security tab.
  3. Click Edit…, select your user (calle), and make sure you have Full control (Allow).
  4. Click Apply → OK.

If you can’t change it, try running Anki as administrator once (right‑click Anki icon → Run as administrator) and then retry the add‑on update.

Step 3 – Manually clear the problematic backup folder

Still in C:\Users\calle\AppData\Roaming\Anki2\addons21\:

  1. If you see a folder called files_backup, rename it to something like:
    files_backup_old

or delete it if you’re comfortable doing so.
  2. Make sure the folder:
    C:\Users\calle\AppData\Roaming\Anki2\addons21\678942895\

    is not read‑only (right‑click → Properties → uncheck Read‑only).

Step 4 – Try updating the AnkiHub add-on again

  1. Start Anki (you can try once as administrator if needed).
  2. Go to Tools → Add-ons → Get add-ons… and install/update the AnkiHub add-on (ID 1322529746) if it’s not the latest.
  3. Restart Anki.
  4. Then try: AnkiHub → Sync Decks/DeckStreams.

Step 5 – If DeckStream still won’t update

Please reply with:

  • Screenshot of Tools → Add-ons showing:
    • AnkiHub add-on (ID 1322529746) and its version.
    • Add-on 678942895 (name and whether it’s enabled).
  • Whether you still see any error pop‑up, and if so, the exact text.
  • The link to the DeckStream you’re trying to update (from AnkiHub).

That will help determine if there’s still a permission issue or if something specific with the AnkiHub add‑on / DeckStream is going on.

Hello,

The error is related to add-on 678942895. The best workaround is to contact the deck author to resolve the issue.

You can also try updating the add-on while running Anki in safe mode:

Starting Anki in safe mode will temporarily disable all add-ons. To do this, open Anki while holding down the Shift key. Then go to Tools > Add-ons > Check for Updates > Restart Anki.
