Moving cards back to original deck

Hi!

When studying for my in-house exams, I moved several AnKing Sketchy cards into a new personal deck so I could organize them by my in house lectures. Now that my in house exams are over, I’d like to move those cards back into their original AnKing decks.

Is there a way to do this so that the cards return to their correct subdecks within AnKing?

Thank you!

Hi Emily!

To move your cards back to their original AnKing subdecks, you can use Anki’s built-in card browser. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open Anki and click on Browse in the main screen
  2. Select the cards you want to move back (you can use tags or search for cards in your personal deck)
  3. Right-click the selected cards and choose Change Deck
  4. In the dialog that appears, select the appropriate AnKing subdeck where the cards originally belonged

If you’re not sure which specific subdeck each card belongs to, you might want to:

  1. Look at the card’s tags - often AnKing cards have tags that correspond to their original subdeck structure
  2. Check the card’s note fields for any subject identifiers that might help place it in the correct subdeck

For AnkiHub decks specifically, you could also consider using the “Reset local changes” function if you’ve made no other changes to these cards besides moving them:

  1. Go to Browse in Anki
  2. Click on the AnkiHub menu in the top bar
  3. Select “Reset all local changes”
  4. Choose the AnKing deck
  5. Click OK

This would restore the cards to their original state, including their deck placement, but be aware that this will also remove any other personal edits you might have made to those cards.

Hi,

If you created a normal deck, just do what the bot said here. You can use the shortcut Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on Mac) to select all the cards in the deck at one time.

If you created a filtered deck, just click the deck, and an “Empty” button should appear. This will return the cards to their original deck.

Let me know if that helps!

I created a normal deck using cards from various AnKing decks, but I don’t remember which original deck each card came from. Is there a way to automatically send the cards back to their original decks without knowing their sources?

I just want to clarify one thing. When you talk about “various AnKing decks,” are you referring to the tags?

The AnKing Deck is typically one large deck; it doesn’t have subdecks by default. Instead, all the cards are organized by tags. Decks are what you see on the main screen, and tags are seen on the left in the browser screen.

  • If your AnKing deck does have subdecks and you moved cards from them to another deck, there’s no way for the cards to get back to their original decks automatically, as Anki doesn’t track where the cards came from. If you could send some screenshots, I can understand what’s happening better.

  • If you are referring to tags and your AnKing deck is just one main deck (which is how it comes by default), you can simply return everything to that deck. The tags aren’t affected by which deck the cards are in and will continue to display normally on the left side of the browser.
