My Anking Deck only shows 15 cards even though I have set the New Cards to 30 and Review to 999

Hi! Looking for help. I change the limit of new cards for each of the different subdecks I have and I usually have no problem shifting them in and out except for my main Anking deck which only shows me 15 new cards at a time. Any idea what I’m doing wrong? Below is a screenshot of everything you might need:

I am currently only studying cards from the cellular physiology tag under #SketchyPhysiology hence these are all I’ve unsuspended

A few things to check that commonly cause this:

  1. Parent vs. subdeck limits

    • Make sure you’re looking at / studying the same deck whose limits you changed.
    • In the deck options screen, confirm you’re editing the options group actually assigned to AnKing Step Deck (click the gear next to the deck name → Options, and check the name of the options group at the top).
    • If you have subdecks, the parent deck’s limit can cap the total. Set the parent’s New cards/day to at least 30 (or higher) and see if it changes.
  2. Today-only limits / custom study

    • In the Daily Limits section, confirm that the Today only toggles are off unless you’re explicitly using them.
    • If you recently used Custom Study (e.g., “Increase today’s new card limit”), try:
      • Tools → Preferences → Reset Custom Study (or delete the custom study deck if you made one),
      • then restart Anki and check the counts again.
  3. New card position & order

    • In the same options group, check:
      • New cards: is it set to “Show new cards in random order” or “order added”?
      • Bury related new cards might reduce how many appear if many are in the same note. Try temporarily disabling burying and see if the new count increases.
  4. Are there only 15 new cards actually due?

    • In the Browser, search:
      • deck:"AnKing Step Deck::[exact subdeck name you’re studying]" is:new tag:SketchyPhysiology tag:"cellular physiology"
    • Make sure there are more than 15 cards that are:
      • Unsuspended,
      • In the “New” queue (not review/learning),
      • In that exact deck.
    • If they’re still suspended or in another subdeck, they won’t show up.
  5. Filtered decks

    • If you’re studying via a filtered deck (e.g., only SketchyPhysiology cards), the filtered deck’s limit may be 15 even if the main deck is 30.
    • Check: click the filtered deck → Rebuild → Options and increase New cards there.

If you can, could you share:

  • A screenshot of the gear → Options → New Cards tab for AnKing Step Deck,
  • And confirm whether you’re studying from the main deck or from a filtered deck?

That will make it easier to say exactly where the 15‑card cap is coming from.

Hello,

Based on your screenshot, it looks like this tag contains cards in decks other than the AnKing Step Deck. Is the HIGH YIELD/MIX deck a subdeck of your AnKing Step Deck? Also, I noticed in your settings screenshot that you are adjusting the new cards per day in the “This deck” tab instead of the “Preset” tab (to make sure the settings are applied correctly).

Please ensure your daily limit settings look like this:

Then, click to save the changes to all subdecks:

You should be all set after that. Just make sure the cards are actually located within the AnKing Step Deck or one of its subdecks. If the cards are in a different deck, they won’t appear under the AnKing Step Deck.

To explain a little quirk of Anki (which is actually expected behavior): if you set a parent deck limit to 30 and its subdecks to 30, you can study up to 30 cards in any subdeck. However, every card you review in a subdeck also counts toward the parent deck’s limit. For example, if the AnKing Step Deck has a limit of 30 and its subdeck has a limit of 30, reviewing 15 cards in the subdeck will leave 15 cards remaining in both the subdeck and the parent deck. If you finish all 30 cards in the subdeck, the parent deck will then show zero new cards.

If you only study via subdecks, this setup works fine. However, if you study using both the subdecks and the parent deck, you may need to set the AnKing Step Deck limit to a higher number.

Hi! Failed to mention that anking cards under the “constanzo” and “high yield” tags are changed to a different deck so i can study them separately. They are not currently subdecks under anking.

You need to make sure that the number of new cards with this tag in the AnKing Step Deck totals more than 15. If the total is more than 15, but your AnKing Step Deck is only showing 15 new cards, it may be due to the factors I explained above.

Let me know if any of these steps I mentioned works for you!
