AnKing Step Not Displaying Correct Number of Unlocked Cards & Delaying New Cards

There is a discrepancy between the total number of cards when I click on the deck. I am concerned I am not actually doing the total # of cards. Also, I didn’t unlock any new cards yesterday and yet I have new cards showing up? Please help

Reading: Why do I have the wrong number of cards/notes in my AnKing deck?

Hello! I can help explain what’s happening with your AnKing Step deck display. Looking at your screenshots, there are two issues to address:

Card Count Discrepancy

This is a common question with AnKing decks! The difference between the numbers you’re seeing is due to how Anki counts notes versus cards:

  • When clicking on your deck, you see 31k+ cards in the first screenshot
  • The browser shows different counts in the second screenshot

This is normal and explained by the difference between notes and cards in Anki:

  • One note can contain multiple cards (using cloze deletions or card templates)
  • The AnKing deck has approximately 28,800 notes, but this translates to around 35,000 cards
  • Your specific count may vary depending on which parts of the deck you’ve subscribed to

New Cards Appearing Without Unlocking

Regarding new cards showing up even though you didn’t unlock any:

  1. Daily Limits: By default, Anki resets your new card limit each day. If you didn’t study all available new cards yesterday, they’ll show up today (along with today’s new cards).

  2. Scheduler Behavior: Anki’s daily limits work in a way that new cards don’t accumulate if you miss a day - they reset to your daily limit.

  3. Card Queue: The numbers at the bottom of your screen (6 + 9 + 59) represent new cards (blue), cards in learning (orange), and cards to review (green).

Suggestions:

  • Check your deck options settings for “New cards/day” to see how many new cards Anki is set to show you daily
  • If you want to temporarily stop new cards, you can set the new cards/day to 0
  • To verify exactly which cards are “new,” you can use the browser and filter by “is:new” in your specific deck

Does this help clarify what’s happening with your deck? Let me know if you have any other questions!

Card Count Discrepancy

This is actually a common question for AnKing deck users. The difference between the numbers you’re seeing relates to how Anki counts notes versus cards:

I’ll help explain the issues you’re seeing with your AnKing Step deck:

Card Count Discrepancy

The difference in card counts is normal and relates to how Anki distinguishes between notes and cards:

  • A note is a single piece of information you want to learn
  • A card is what you actually see during review
  • One note can generate multiple cards (especially with cloze deletions)

As explained in the official AnKing FAQ:

There are roughly 28,800 notes in the deck, but the number 35,000 refers to the number of cards in the deck.

For example, a cloze note like I {{c1::love}} {{c2::AnkiHub}} {{c3::a lot}} creates 3 separate cards from just one note.

New Cards Appearing Without Unlocking

As for new cards appearing when you didn’t unlock any:

  1. Daily Reset: Anki resets your new card count each day to whatever limit you’ve set in deck options. If you didn’t use all your new cards yesterday, they don’t carry over - instead, Anki makes a fresh batch available today.

  2. Due Numbers: The numbers at the bottom of your screen (6 + 9 + 59) represent:

    • Blue (6): New cards
    • Orange (9): Cards in learning
    • Green (59): Review cards
  3. Card Flow: Even if you don’t manually unlock cards in AnkiHub, Anki will still show you the daily allotment of new cards based on your deck settings.

If you want to temporarily stop seeing new cards, you can:

  • Set “New cards/day” to 0 in the deck options
  • Or use the “custom study” option to temporarily change your study parameters

Would you like more information about managing your daily card limits or AnkiHub deck settings?

Hello,

In the first image, the two card counts (Anki’s and the add-on’s below) match, which is correct. In the second image, it seems that the other add-on counts cards differently. You can trust the count on Anki’s main screen, so there’s no need to worry about that discrepancy!

Regarding the new cards, there are two possibilities:

  1. Deck Settings Limit: As the bot mentioned, you might have a daily limit for new cards set in your deck options. This would cause new cards (that were already unsuspended) to appear each day. You can send a screenshot of your deck settings if you’d like me to take a look, but if you know what I mean, this probably isn’t the issue.
  2. AnkiHub Settings: It might be related to your AnkiHub settings for new cards.
  • On your Anki main screen, go to AnkiHub > Deck Management.
  • Click on your deck and check the box shown below. This should be checked if you want new cards from updates to be automatically suspended.

Let me know if this helps!
