Hi,
I was adding cards to my deck and abruptly, all of my review cards on my decks EXCEPT for the AnkiHub ones (Jacksparrow, etc.) changed to Cloze 1 and now are blank, when they were originally Card 1. Please let me know how I can fix this without losing my scheduling! I looked at the other form for this (Why are my cards blank/empty when reviewing?) and it wasn’t relevant to me, as this is a non-AnkiHub deck. Please help!!! Thank you so much.
Best,
Kristina

Hi Kristina,
I’m sorry to hear about your issue with your non-AnkiHub decks showing blank cards. This appears to be related to a note type change that has occurred with your cards. Since you mentioned they changed from “Card 1” to “Cloze 1” and are now blank, this is likely because the cards have been converted to a cloze deletion type without having proper cloze formatting.
Here’s how you can fix this without losing your scheduling:
Solution:
-
Check for empty cards first:
- In Anki, go to Tools → Empty Cards
- Click Delete (leave the box ticked)
- This will remove any cards that are completely empty
-
Fix the note type issue:
- Open the Browser (press B)
- Search for your affected decks (e.g., “deck:Jacksparrow”)
- Select all affected cards
- Right-click and choose Change Note Type
- Change back to the original note type (likely “Basic” or whatever was used before)
- Make sure to map the fields correctly when prompted
-
If the above doesn’t work:
- You might need to restore from a backup
- In Anki, go to File → Switch Profile
- Click Open Backup
- Choose a recent backup from before the issue occurred
This issue is different from the AnkiHub-related blank card problem you referenced, as that’s typically caused by protected fields on AnkiHub decks.
If you need more assistance, please let me know which step you’re having trouble with or if none of these solutions work for your specific situation.
Hello,
You’re right, that tutorial doesn’t apply to your issue.
If you were just adding cards to your local/personal decks and suddenly, with no apparent reason, all the Front fields changed to blank, that’s a rare bug. Everything suggests this is an Anki error, not something caused by AnkiHub.
If the issue happened recently (which seems to be the case), you can restore a backup made before the problem occurred. This will bring your collection back to how it was at that time, with minimal loss of progress.
Please follow this tutorial:
How to Restore from Backup
This bug likely won’t happen again, and restoring the backup should fix the issue.
However, if it does happen again, please let me know!
You can also post about it on the official Anki forum to see if anyone has insight into what might have caused it:
