Here’s what likely happened and how to fix it:
When you restored an older Anki collection backup, you essentially told Anki: “Replace my current collection with this older snapshot.” From AnkiHub’s perspective, that older snapshot may:
- Not be correctly linked to the AnkiHub deck(s), or
- Be so far out of date that Anki/AnkiHub are forcing a one-way sync and blocking normal updates.
Try these steps in order:
1. Make sure basic Anki → AnkiWeb sync works
First confirm regular Anki syncing is OK (before worrying about AnkiHub):
- In Anki desktop, click the sync button (top right) or press
y.
- If you’re asked to Upload or Download, choose:
- Upload to AnkiWeb if your computer has the collection you want to keep.
- Download from AnkiWeb if AnkiWeb has the collection you want to keep.
If this prompt appears every time, it means there’s a conflict and a one-way sync is being required. In that case:
- Go to Tools → Preferences → Network
- Check “On next sync, force changes in one direction”
- Sync, choose Upload (if the local collection is the correct one).
- After that completes, sync your other devices and choose Download there.
Only move on once normal 2‑way sync with AnkiWeb is working and no longer forcing upload/download every time.
2. Re‑link the AnkiHub deck(s)
After restoring a backup, your AnkiHub subscription link can break or be out of date.
For each AnkiHub deck you expect updates from:
- In Anki desktop, go to Tools → Add-ons → AnkiHub → Config (or open AnkiHub from the menu).
- Confirm you are logged into AnkiHub in the add-on with the same account you use on the website.
- Open AnkiHub → Manage Decks:
- Make sure the deck you’re using is subscribed.
- Click Link deck or Relink to the correct local deck if needed.
- Run a manual AnkiHub sync from the add-on (AnkiHub → Sync).
Check whether:
- New images now appear
- Card updates (text/fields/templates) change
- Tags match what you see in the AnkiHub deck on the web
3. If that doesn’t work: create a fresh profile and re‑import
If the backup is too messy to recover cleanly, a clean slate often fixes “no updates” issues:
- In Anki desktop: File → Switch Profile → Add
Create a new profile (e.g., Test-AnkiHub).
- In that new profile, log into AnkiHub via the add-on.
- Use AnkiHub → Manage Decks → Subscribe + Download to pull a fresh copy of the shared deck from AnkiHub.
- Sync normally with AnkiWeb to back this profile up as well.
If this fresh profile receives images/updates/tags properly, then the issue is with the old restored collection, not AnkiHub itself.
4. What would help us help you further
If you still can’t get updates after the above, please reply with:
- A screenshot of your AnkiHub → Manage Decks window
- Any error messages you see when:
- Syncing with AnkiWeb
- Syncing with AnkiHub
- Whether other devices (phone/iPad, etc.) are currently in sync, and which device has the “correct” state you want to keep
With that information, we can suggest more precise next steps (e.g., which side to force-sync from, or whether you need to re-link specific note types).
