Restoring all local changes without removing edits?

I am missing cards in my Anking deck. For example I have 31886 cards in AK_Step1_V12 and they should be more. I looked around for a fix and the only one is to resent local changes. Will this remove all my notes I made on some cards?

You’re right to be cautious here—good question to ask before clicking anything.

1. What “Reset local changes” does (AnkiHub)

When you Reset local changes on an AnkiHub deck:

  • AnkiHub discards your local modifications to shared fields/card templates/tags for that deck.
  • Your collection is brought back in line with the current AnkiHub version of the deck.
  • This can:
    • Re-add missing cards that were deleted locally (if they still exist on AnkiHub).
    • Overwrite or remove local edits you made to shared content (e.g. question text, answer text, shared fields, shared tags).

2. What is not affected

Generally, truly personal-only fields (like Extra, Lecture Notes, Personal, etc., depending on how the deck is configured on AnkiHub) are not overwritten when syncing with AnkiHub, because they are not synced to the shared deck at all.

However:

  • If you edited shared fields (e.g. main question/answer text) or card templates, those changes can be lost when you reset local changes.
  • If you’re not sure which fields are shared vs personal, assume that some of your edits might be removed.

3. Before you do anything: protect yourself

I strongly recommend:

  1. Make a full manual backup of your collection

    • In Anki Desktop:
      File → Export

      • Export format: Anki collection package (*.colpkg)
      • Include: Whole collection
    • Save this somewhere safe. If anything goes wrong, you can restore this later.
  2. Optionally, duplicate important notes

    • If you have a small number of cards with very important personal edits, you can:
      • Open the Browser, find those cards/notes.
      • Copy your important text into a temporary text file, or duplicate those notes into a separate personal deck that is not linked to AnkiHub.

4. About your missing cards / counts

For the missing cards in AK_Step1_V12:

  • First, make sure you’re looking at total cards in the deck including subdecks (right‑click deck → “Parent counts included” or check in Browser with a deck filter).
  • Also check if any cards are:
    • In a different deck (moved by accident),
    • Suspended/filtered (e.g. in a filtered deck),
    • Or buried (temporary).

If, after checking, you’re still missing cards and everything is properly subscribed to the AnKing/AnkiHub deck, then Reset local changes is indeed often the fix used to restore the deck structure and cards.

5. Practical recommendation

Given your situation:

  1. Create a .colpkg backup first (non‑negotiable).
  2. Then you can safely try Reset local changes on the AnKing deck in AnkiHub.
  3. After the reset + sync:
    • Confirm that card counts look correct.
    • Check a few of your previously edited cards to see whether your important notes survived.
  4. If you’re unhappy with the result, you can restore from the backup you created.

If you’d like, reply with:

  • A screenshot of your AK_Step1_V12 deck counts and
  • A screenshot of the AnkiHub deck page showing the expected card count,

and I can help you decide whether Reset local changes is the right next step, and what risk there is to your specific notes.
