my spacebar no longer works in Anki to view the back of any cards after downloading AnkiHub. I already changed the video driver, and made sure the box that says spacebar is checked. this wasnât an issue before downloading this deck. I also disabled add-ons and opened Anki while holding shift, this fixed the problem. does this mean I will always have to open Anki while holding shift? that I have to always disable my add-ons? is there any fix for this?

Thanks for the detailed descriptionâthat helps narrow it down.
Because Anki works normally when you start it while holding Shift (which temporarily disables all add-ons), this almost certainly means an add-on conflict, not a problem with the AnKing deck itself. Since the issue started âafter downloading AnkiHub,â itâs very likely related to the AnkiHub add-on or how it interacts with another add-on.
Hereâs how to systematically fix it so you donât have to hold Shift every time:
1. Confirm which add-on is causing the issue
- Start Anki normally (no Shift).
- Go to Tools â Add-ons.
- Disable all add-ons.
- Re-enable them one by one (or in small groups), restarting Anki after each change.
- Each time, test if the spacebar reveals the back of the card again.
- When the spacebar stops working right after enabling a certain add-on (or group), youâve found the culprit or conflict.
Most often, the relevant ones will be:
- AnkiHub add-on
- Any add-ons that modify:
- the reviewer interface
- keyboard shortcuts
- the card layout or video/audio playback
2. Common things to check for AnkiHub
Once youâve isolated that enabling AnkiHub (alone or alongside another add-on) breaks the spacebar:
- Make sure youâre on the latest Anki version recommended by AnkiHub (see the AnkiHub documentation / install page).
- Ensure the AnkiHub add-on is updated:
- Tools â Add-ons â Check for updates
- Check Config / settings of:
- AnkiHub
- Any keyboard-shortcut or reviewer-modifying add-ons
to see if the spacebar has been remapped to something else.
If itâs clearly a conflict between AnkiHub and another add-on (e.g., it works with AnkiHub alone, but not when Add-on X is also enabled), you can:
- Leave the conflicting add-on disabled, or
- Temporarily disable it only when doing regular reviews.
3. You should not need to always hold Shift
Holding Shift is just a diagnostic / emergency workaround. Once you identify and adjust/remove the offending add-on(s), you should be able to:
- Start Anki normally
- Keep AnkiHub enabled
- Use the spacebar to show the back as usual
4. Please share a bit more so we can help precisely
To troubleshoot further, it would really help if you reply on your topic with:
- Your Anki version (e.g., 2.1.65 Qt6).
- Your OS (Windows, macOS, Linux).
- A screenshot or list of your enabled add-ons, especially any that:
- change keyboard shortcuts
- modify the reviewer
Once you post that, we can narrow down which specific add-on or combination is causing the spacebar issue and suggest an exact fix or setting change.
Hello,
I would be happy to help. ![]()
There isnât much to the AnkiHub add-on that should cause an issue with the Space bar. I use the same button for the same thing, and have never had any issues
You mentioned disabling add-ons and that this resolved the issue; have you double-checked that it was disabling the AnkiHub add-on in particular that caused this? My immediate huncy would be that itâs likelier to have been a different add-on
That would be what I would check first, at least, as it seems like the likeliest candidate and, even if not, eliminating it from consideration will be helpful in figuring out next steps
Give that a shot, let me know how you fare, and weâll go from there and hopefully we can get you squared away. ![]()
it was a different add on that was causing the issue. itâs all fixed now, thanks!
