To Update All Tags and Unseen Cards Without Touching Existing Cards

Hello AnKing community!

I recently finished my Step 1 exam and have started my first rotation in surgery. I’ve been editing my Step 1 cards on my own and would like to keep them as they are, without being overwritten by AnkiHub updates.

Currently, I haven’t updated my cards for over a year because I’m afraid of losing the corrections I’ve already made. However, I’ve heard that AnkiHub has improved tagging for Step 2 cards. Is there a way to update the tags for ALL cards and add information to unseen/new cards without affecting the edits I’ve made to the cards I’ve already reviewed?

If so, could you please explain how to do it?

Thank you so much!

Hello,

If I’m understanding correctly it sounds like you want to protect your existing fields (and their edits) while still updating your tags?

If so, you’ll just need to protect the fields in which you have edits that you’d like to preserve. This can be done via the ‘protect fields’ function: Managing Protected Fields

Once protected, any edits or alterations you made to anything in the fields you choose to protect will be preserved and Ankihub will not be able to overwrite them. It might be worth pointing out, however, that this is a trade-off. If, for example, you protect the text field this means that any edits you have to the text field will be preserved but it will also mean that you can’t receive any updates to the that same text field (as with new, or updated, cards for example). Thus, protecting a field is a trade-off between preserving existing edits and being able to access updates.

But, from your description it sounds like you’re primarily interested in tags which will be unaffected by protecting a note field.

It might also be worth pointing out that there is significant overlap between the step 1 and step 2 cards (and material), FWIW. Many cards are tagged by both step 1 and step 2. Just FYI.

Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.
