Active Subscription to Step Deck and Downloaded, But No Cards

I just subscribed to the AnKing Step Deck and paid for a monthly subscription, and then downloaded the deck to my desktop Anki app. However, there are no cards – and when I click ā€œbrowseā€ and try to look through the deck, there’s nothing there as well (i.e., there aren’t any cards to unsuspend). How can I get access to the cards?

I’ll help you with your issue regarding the AnKing Step Deck subscription. Let me check if there’s any relevant information in the forum that might help address this problem.

Hi @hatfieldcjc,

This is a common issue with the AnKing Step Deck! When you first download the deck, all cards are suspended by default, which is why you’re seeing 0 cards in your deck and nothing in the browser.

How to Access Your Cards:

  1. Go to the Browse function in Anki
  2. On the left-hand side, click on Tags
  3. Find the tag you want to use (for example, #AK_Step1_V12 or #AK_Step2_V12 depending on which step you’re studying for)
  4. Select the cards you want to study (click on one card and press Ctrl+A/Cmd+A to select all, or just select specific ones)
  5. Right-click on the selected cards and choose Toggle Suspend

After doing this, the cards will appear as blue (unsuspended) in your main Anki screen, and you’ll be able to study them.

This approach is by design - the AnKing deck uses a subject-based unsuspending strategy so you can gradually add cards as you study different topics rather than being overwhelmed with all cards at once.

If you’re still having trouble after trying these steps, please let me know and I’ll help troubleshoot further.

That didn’t work – there are no tags for the AnKing deck, just tags from my locally created decks.

I see the issue now. Let me help you troubleshoot this further since the cards don’t appear to be properly downloaded to your Anki.

Hi @hatfieldcjc,

It sounds like your AnKing Step Deck may not have properly installed. Let me help you troubleshoot this issue:

Complete Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. First, confirm your AnkiHub setup:

    • Make sure the AnkiHub add-on is properly installed in Anki
    • Verify that you’re logged into the AnkiHub add-on with the same account you used to purchase the subscription
  2. Try resetting your local changes:

    • Go to Browse in your Anki
    • At the top click on the AnkiHub addon tab
    • Press Reset all local changes
    • This will restore everything from AnkiHub’s servers
  3. Verify subscription and installation:

    • In Anki, click on the AnkiHub menu at the top
    • Go to Deck Management and check if the AnKing Step Deck is listed as subscribed
    • If it is subscribed, click on the deck and make sure it shows as installed
  4. Force a fresh sync:

    • Click the Sync button in Anki
    • If prompted to upload to AnkiWeb or download from AnkiWeb, choose the appropriate option
    • After syncing, check if the tags now appear in Browse → Tags
  5. Check for the deck in Anki:

    • Even if it shows 0 cards, the deck should appear in your deck list
    • If the deck appears but with 0 cards, this is normal as all cards are suspended by default

If after these steps you still don’t see the AnKing tags when browsing, your deck subscription might not be properly activated or the deck may not have fully downloaded.

I’d recommend checking the Subscribing to a Deck guide, which provides detailed instructions with screenshots for the complete process.

Let me know which of these steps you’ve tried and what happens when you attempt them. This will help us narrow down the exact issue.

Resetting my local changes worked – thank you!

I’m glad to hear that resetting your local changes worked! That’s excellent news, @hatfieldcjc.

Now that your AnKing Step Deck is properly installed, remember that all cards will be suspended by default (which explains why it showed 0 cards initially). To start studying:

  1. Go to Browse in Anki
  2. Click on Tags in the left sidebar
  3. Navigate to the tags you want to study (like #AK_Step1_V12 or #AK_Step2_V12)
  4. Select the cards you want to unsuspend (you can filter by topic, resource, etc.)
  5. Right-click and select Toggle Suspend to unsuspend them

This design allows you to gradually add cards as you progress through your study materials rather than being overwhelmed with thousands of cards at once.

If you’re looking for a specific study approach, many users follow a resource-based method - watching videos (like Boards & Beyond, Pathoma, etc.) and then unsuspending the corresponding cards.

If you have any other questions as you get started with the deck, feel free to ask!
