Hello,
My Anki app keeps crashing whenever I click browse. I subscribed to the Anking Step Deck which has 28,000 ish cards as of me posting this. However, only one shows up in the Anking Step Deck when I sync it using the AnkiHub add on. I read that I should click browse to unsuspend the cards I want to study, but whenever I click browse, the anki app crashes. I have tried this on multiple devices and have had the same result, including on a brand new PC.
This is the version of Anki that I have:
Version 25.09.4 (d52ca669)
Python 3.13.5 Qt 6.9.1 Chromium 122
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Thanks for all the details you included — that helps narrow things down.
Crashing specifically when opening Browse with a large shared deck + AnkiHub usually points to either:
- An Anki version/add-on conflict, or
- Corruption / bad config in the profile or collection.
Since it’s happening on multiple devices (even a new PC), I’d focus on version/add-ons and making sure the AnkiHub setup is clean.
1. Check Anki version & compatibility
Your version:
Version 25.09.4 (d52ca669) – Qt 6.9.1
This looks like a very new / beta-style version. AnkiHub and many add-ons are generally tested and supported on stable releases from AnkiWeb, not on very new or experimental builds.
Action:
- Backup first:
File → Export → Collection.apkg (include scheduling + media).
- Install a current stable release from the official Anki download page (not from the Microsoft Store or other sources).
- Open the same Anki profile in that stable version and test:
- Go to
Tools → Add-ons → Check for Updates.
- Make sure AnkiHub is installed and updated.
- Then try
Browse.
If Browse works on a stable version, then the crash is likely due to your current Anki build.
2. Test Anki with add-ons disabled
We want to know if this is an add-on issue (possibly AnkiHub interaction with your build).
- Start Anki while holding Shift (this launches with add-ons disabled).
- Try clicking Browse.
- If Anki still crashes: it’s likely a core Anki or collection issue.
- If Anki does not crash: it’s likely an add-on conflict.
If it doesn’t crash with add-ons disabled:
- Restart Anki normally.
- Go to
Tools → Add-ons.
- Disable everything except AnkiHub.
- Restart Anki and try Browse again.
- If it works: enable other add-ons one by one until you find the one causing the crash.
- If it crashes with only AnkiHub enabled on your current version, that points to a compatibility problem with this Anki build.
3. Confirm the AnKing Step Deck is properly synced
The fact that only 1 card appears suggests the full step deck hasn’t actually been added to your collection yet.
Please check:
- In the AnkiHub add-on:
- Open Anki →
AnkiHub → Decks.
- Confirm you are subscribed to the AnKing Step Deck there.
- Hit Sync with AnkiHub and let it fully complete.
- Then in Anki’s Decks screen:
- Check if the AnKing Step Deck now shows a large card count.
- If Browse is still crashing, try:
Tools → Check Database.
- Then try Browse again.
If possible, also test:
- In Browse (once we can open it), search for the deck via:
deck:"AnKing Step Deck"
to confirm cards are present and not just filtered out.
4. Try a fresh test profile
This helps isolate if your existing profile/collection is corrupted.
File → Switch Profile → Add…
- Create a new empty profile.
- Install only AnkiHub in that profile.
- Subscribe to the AnKing Step Deck again in that fresh profile and sync.
- Try clicking Browse.
- If this new profile works fine: your original profile may have corruption or a conflict.
- If the new profile also crashes on Browse, even with only AnkiHub + stable Anki: then it’s more likely a bug that needs logs.
5. If it’s still crashing – what to send next
If you reply here, please include:
- Exact Anki version you’re using after trying a stable release (from
Help → About).
- Whether:
- Anki crashes with Shift-start (add-ons disabled).
- Anki crashes in a new empty profile.
- A screenshot of:
AnkiHub → Decks showing the AnKing Step Deck subscription.
- Any error logs if they appear:
- On Windows, sometimes a small “Anki has encountered a problem” window or a traceback appears — copy/paste that text here if you see it.
With that info, we can better tell whether this is:
- A setup issue with the AnKing Step Deck on AnkiHub, or
- A bug that needs to be reported to the AnkiHub / AnKing team or upstream Anki.
Hello,
Please try the Reset Window Sizes option under Tools > Preferences.

Let me know if you need help with anything else
I have tried what you have recommended but no difference in the results.
Specifically, I went into Tools > Preference > Appearance and select “Reset Window Sized” and got ”Windows size and location have been reset”.
I clicked “Close” and then “Browse” and I got same result.
Please advise what else to try.
Have you tried restarting Anki after resetting the window size? Please restart Anki and see if the error persists.
It now works, but takes a long time to bring up the browse function on the brand new Windows PC. The browse function also does not work on AnkiMobile on my iPad as well.
Could you please tell me whether you have any other decks in Anki, or if you only have the AnKing Step deck? Screenshots would be helpful.
Did this issue start happening exactly after you downloaded the AnKing Step Deck?
Is the browser simply slow to load, or is there still an error appearing? The more detail you can provide, the better we can understand what’s happening.
