Hello,
After purchasing the AnKing Step Deck and syncing it to my local desktop Anki, every time I click âsyncâ, Anki tries to download from AnkiHub (I assume because AnKing Step Deck is not fully downloaded), and it takes a long time. After it completes, there are still many missing files. I have already tried resetting local changes to the deck, forcing the sync in one direction, and deselecting all protected fields in AnkiHub. Please let me know if anyone has any idea on how to fix this. If there is a way to remove/redownload the Anki Step Deck, I would be open to trying that, as I have not started using the deck. Reference images have been attached.
Thank you!

Here are a few things to try to get the AnKing Step Deck media to fully download and stop reâdownloading every time:
1. Confirm youâre syncing from AnkiHub, not AnkiWeb
- In Anki, go to Tools â Addâons â AnkiHub â Config.
- Make sure youâre:
- Logged into the correct AnkiHub account (the one that owns the Step Deck).
- Subscribed to the AnKing Step Deck on the AnkiHub website with that same account.
If you were logged into a different account, log out in the AnkiHub addâon, log back in with the correct one, then retry the media sync.
2. Force a full media reâdownload from AnkiHub
- In Anki, open Tools â Addâons â AnkiHub â Config.
- Look for an option like âReset media sync / redownload all mediaâ (wording may vary slightly by version).
- Enable that, restart Anki, then click the AnkiHub button and run Sync.
This tells AnkiHub to ignore its previous media state and reâoffer all media files again, which often fixes âstuck at a small number of filesâ issues.
3. Check for local media issues
- In Anki, go to Tools â Check Media again.
- In the dialog, click âDelete Unusedâ to clear out stray files.
- Close Anki completely and reopen it.
- Run AnkiHub â Sync once more and let it finish without interruption.
Sometimes a partially downloaded or corrupted media db can prevent Anki from marking files as synced.
4. Try a clean profile + fresh download (since you havenât started the deck)
Since you havenât begun studying the Step Deck yet, a clean setup is often fastest:
- In Anki, go to File â Switch Profile â Add and create a new profile.
- In that new profile:
- Install the AnkiHub addâon.
- Log into the same AnkiHub account.
- Subscribe to the AnKing Step Deck again from AnkiHub (if needed).
- Use the AnkiHub button to download the deck and then sync media.
- After media completes, run Tools â Check Media in this new profile and see how many files are still missing.
If it works correctly in a fresh profile, weâll know the issue is with the original profileâs media state.
5. If it still shows thousands of missing files
Please reply with:
- Your Anki version (e.g., 2.1.65 Qt6) and AnkiHub addâon version.
- Whether the fresh profile test (step 4) showed the same number of missing files.
- A screenshot of:
- AnkiHub â Deck Subscriptions window
- The top of the Check Media popup (just a small crop is fine).
That info will help determine whether this is:
- A known partialâmedia issue with the AnKing Step Deck on AnkiHub, or
- Something specific to your setup that we can escalate to the AnkiHub team.
Hello,
The Anki âCheck Mediaâ feature may sometimes show missing media even when your deck isnât missing anything. I recommend holding off when it prompts you to sync, and please let us know if you actually see any broken image icons on your flashcards.
If you donât see any missing images or broken image icons while studying, you should be all set!
Okay - if I make a new profile and redownload the anking step deck, would I have to pay again? If not, I may try that so I donât have to see the slow sync every time. Please let me know. Thank you!
You can create a new profile and sync with your Anki account, but youâll have to download everything again, which will take even longer. The initial sync just takes a while because it has to download everything. Once thatâs done, it shouldnât take nearly as long.
