Missing files

Hello, not sure if this has been asked before but my name is Adrian. I want to start using he Step Deck for when i start medical school in august. I dowloaded the deck while at work which i have poor connection there. I think that because of this a lot of my files are missing or corrupted. I can not see images while doing flashcards it just shows a generic missing image icon instead of the real image. How can i fix this?

You’re right that a bad connection during download can cause missing or corrupted media, especially for large decks like the Step Deck.

Here’s how to fix it:

1. Re-sync AnkiHub media

  1. In Anki (desktop), go to Tools → Add-ons.
  2. Select AnkiHub → click Config (or Config/Settings depending on your version).
  3. Look for an option like “Redownload media”, “Force media sync”, or “Reset media” for the deck and run it.
  4. Let it fully finish downloading (stay on a stable Wi‑Fi connection and keep Anki open).

If you’re not sure where this option is, let me know what AnkiHub version you’re on (and OS), and I can guide you more precisely.

2. Check Anki’s missing media report

  1. In Anki, go to Tools → Check Media.
  2. Anki will list missing files and unused files.
    • If there are many missing files for the Step Deck, that confirms the download didn’t complete.
  3. After the AnkiHub media resync (step 1), run Check Media again and see if the list shrinks.

3. Make sure you have the official Step Deck from AnkiHub

If you originally downloaded the deck from somewhere else (e.g. AnkiWeb or Google Drive) and then joined the AnkiHub version, some notes might still point to old media paths.

To be safe:

  1. On AnkiHub, open the official Step Deck page you subscribed to.
  2. Confirm that your Anki collection is linked to that AnkiHub deck (AnkiHub menu → check that the Step Deck appears with a green/ok status).
  3. If needed, you can:
    • Export your current progress (e.g., by tags),
    • Delete the broken local copy of the Step Deck,
    • Re-download the deck fresh from AnkiHub on a solid Wi‑Fi connection,
    • Then restore your progress (we can walk through this if you’d like; don’t delete anything yet without a backup).

4. If the problem persists

Please reply with:

  • A screenshot of one of the cards showing the missing image icon,
  • The output (or a screenshot) from Tools → Check Media,
  • Whether you’re on Windows/Mac/Linux and which Anki version,
  • Whether you first got the deck from AnkiHub or somewhere else.

With that info, I can give you step‑by‑step instructions tailored to your exact setup so you’re ready before August.

I just want to redownload the deck from fresh, i currently have no progress. I am on Mac and the version is Version ⁨25.09.5 (217701ba)⁩. i first go the deck from ankihub

Hello,

I would be happy to help!

Images can take a long time to download the first time you sync because there are so many of them, and it can take even longer if you have a slow connection.

Please check your media sync status:

If your media sync is idle and you are still missing images, please reset local changes: How to Reset Local Changes

You need to keep Anki open while everything is downloading. If you close Anki, the download will pause, but it will resume once you open Anki again with an active internet connection.

This extended sync time and need to keep Anki open only apply to your initial sync since you are downloading everything for the first time.
