Missing media and files

Hi,

I’m using Anki Version ⁨25.07.5 on a Mac Pro.
When I checked Tools → Check Media, I saw thousands of files were missing.
How can I have them on my Anki app?

I see you’re experiencing an issue with missing media files in your Anki app. Based on your screenshots, there are thousands of missing files that need to be addressed. Let me help you resolve this!

Why Media Files Might Be Missing

There are several possible causes for missing media files:

  1. Incomplete sync with AnkiWeb - Media files may not have fully downloaded during syncing
  2. Media wasn’t included in imports - If you imported decks without their media
  3. Protected fields in AnkiHub - If you’re using AnkiHub decks, some fields with media might be protected

How to Fix Missing Media Files

Here are some steps you can take to restore your missing media:

1. Check AnkiHub Media Sync Status (if using AnkiHub)

If you’re using AnkiHub decks:

  • Go to the AnkiHub add-on menu at the top of Anki
  • Check if media sync says “Idle” or “Downloading”
  • If it says “Downloading,” wait for it to complete (can take up to 60 minutes)

2. Force a Full Media Sync with AnkiWeb

  1. Go to Tools > Preferences > Network
  2. Check the box that says “On next sync, force changes in one direction”
  3. Sync your collection
  4. When prompted, choose “Download” to get all media from AnkiWeb

3. Reset Local Changes (for AnkiHub users)

If you’re using AnkiHub decks:

  1. Go to Browse in Anki
  2. Click on the AnkiHub add-on tab at the top
  3. Press “Reset all local changes”
  4. Select the specific deck with missing media

4. Manual Media Recovery

If the above methods don’t work:

  1. Log out of AnkiWeb in your preferences
  2. The next time you sync, Anki will restore any deleted files that are still on AnkiWeb

5. Import Media from External Sources (AnkiHub)

If you’re using AnkiHub decks with special media:

  • Use the AnkiHub > Import Media function to import media from folders, .apkg files, or cloud links

Prevention Tips

To prevent media issues in the future:

  • Ensure full syncs complete before closing Anki
  • Use the Check Media function periodically
  • When importing decks, make sure to include media
  • Back up your collection with File > Create Backup (with media included)

If you need more specific help based on which decks you’re using or where the media came from, please let me know!

Reading: 👑 Downloading the AnKing Step Deck

Hi ies2027,

I see you’re trying to find media files for the AnKing Overhaul Step Deck. Based on your screenshots, you have thousands of missing media files in your Anki collection.

Getting Media for the AnKing Step Deck

The AnKing Step Deck is now distributed through AnkiHub, which includes proper media management. Here’s how to properly get the media files:

If You’re Using AnkiHub:

  1. Check Media Sync Status:

    • Go to the AnkiHub add-on menu at the top of Anki
    • Check if the media sync status says “Idle” or “Downloading”
    • If it says “Downloading,” wait for it to complete (can take up to 60 minutes)
  2. Reset Local Changes:

    • Go to Browse in Anki
    • Click on the AnkiHub add-on tab
    • Press “Reset all local changes”
    • Select the AnKing deck
  3. Check Protected Fields:

    • AnkiHub protects many fields by default (like First Aid, Physeo, etc.)
    • If you need images in these fields, you’ll need to unprotect them through the AnkiHub website

If You’re Not Using AnkiHub Yet:

  1. Install AnkiHub Add-on:

    • Go to Tools > Add-ons > Get Add-ons
    • Paste this code: 1322529746
  2. Subscribe to the Official Deck:

Manual Media Recovery (For Non-AnkiHub Users):

If you’re using an older version and can’t switch to AnkiHub:

  1. Force a Full Media Sync:

    • Go to Tools > Preferences > Network
    • Check “On next sync, force changes in one direction”
    • Sync and choose “Download” to get all media from AnkiWeb
  2. Generate LaTeX Images:

    • Go to Tools > Check Media to generate any missing LaTeX images

Important Notes:

  1. AnkiHub now handles media properly, so importing media separately is only needed for special resource packs.

  2. Some fields in the AnKing deck intentionally don’t have images unless you’ve unprotected those fields and imported the relevant media.

  3. The Text and Extra fields should have images by default in the AnkiHub version.

For a comprehensive guide on the AnKing Step Deck, check out the official wiki on the AnkiHub Community.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you need any clarification on these steps.

Hello,

Just to clarify, Anki’s built-in “Check Media” tool can sometimes show a “missing files” report even when no media is actually missing from your AnkiHub decks. If you see broken image icons, especially in the extra field, that’s when you may have missing media.

If you are seeing broken image icons, please try the following:

Make sure the fields are unprotected (unchecked). Here’s a tutorial on how to do that: How to Manage Protected Fields

Only after saving your protected field preferences, please try resetting local changes again: How to Reset Local Changes

Let me know if you need help with anything else.

Hi,

I think the first tutorial, ‘How to Manage Protected Fields,’ is outdated because what I see at step 5 on my AnkiHub account differs (screenshot below). Could you please tell which ones I should choose?

From what I can see the tutorial appears to be up-to-date, and would appear to match with Step 6 which seems to agree with the image you shared.

You can protect any fields that you would like; it really depends on which fields you want to protect and/or any fields for which you’re seeing broken image icons. In that case, you would protect those fields.

Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.

Actually, the tutorial is outdated and doesn’t show the current options on AnkiHub. Let me prove it.

In the tutorial, it shows the following screens:

However, in my AnkiHub account, I see numerous sub-options under the chosen field.

Back to the problem, I don’t know which fields to choose to protect on AnkiHub, so I won’t see so many missing files on the report when I run Tools → Check Media.

Could you please help?

This is the result on the Tools → Check Media report.

The “AnKingOverhaul (AnKing Step Deck / AnKingMed)” is the note type for which you are protecting the fields.

The screenshot you sent is correct. Please protect the “Lecture Notes” and “Missed Questions” fields, then click “Save.” Afterward, you will need to reset your local changes.

Let me know if this solves your issue.

What does resetting local changes do?

I moved some cards to sub-decks that I created to study separately. Will they be moved back to their original decks?

Also, will the cards be reset? (I’ve been studying many of them for a long period of time, and if they’ll be reset, then I’ll have more cards to finish reviewing.)

Those appear to be the same options from step 6 of the tutorial and the image you shared:

As the options selected may vary, the tutorial exists so that you can change the above options. The defaults are not shown, as the tutorial is there to demonstrate how to change the options contained therein.

Resetting local changes will push a corroboration check of your local collection against the server copy, and make sure that everything is in agreement (unless you have protected something).

In the event that you’re missing anything, it will reinstitute any material that might be missing. Though again here, if a field is protected it will remain unchanged (because it is protected).

Resetting local changes won’t affect your local review history or learning progress; each will be untouched and preserved, so you should be good to go there.

I followed your instructions and also did a local reset. However, I still see broken links on my cards, and the Tools → check media still shows thousands of missing files.

Can you share screenshots of the broken links you’re seeing, just so we can see what you’re seeing?

Additionally, can you confirm the version of Anki that you’re using?

If you can, within Anki go to your top menu bar. From there, click Anki - About Anki and check your version number.

A sample screenshot from a broken link follows:

Regarding my Anki app version, I had already shared it in my original post at the top of this case. You could quickly eyeball it. But, in any case, I’m using Anki Version ⁨25.07.5 on a Mac Pro.

The First Aid media is not synced. To access the First Aid or Boards and Beyond content, you will need a separate subscription to that resource. You can learn more about how this integration works here: McGraw Hill Integration FAQ

You can also understand more about each field here: ✏️ What do all the fields mean in the AnKing Step Deck?

There’s only a problem when you see broken images, predominantly in the Extra field. The screenshot shows the image in that field is displayed correctly.
