Missing Media Files After Syncing AnKing Deck – How to Restore Them?

Hello everyone,

I recently updated and synced my AnKing deck using AnkiHub, but now I’m getting a lot of “Missing: [image file]” messages when I run Check Media. The cards are showing blank where images or diagrams should be. Most of them look like this:

Missing: 010120211258 (1).jpg
Missing: 01012021_1931 (4).jpg
Missing: 01072020_0556 (15).jpg

It seems that Anki is referencing these image files, but they are not actually present in my media folder.

:pushpin: My question is:
How can I restore or correctly sync these missing image files so that they display properly on my cards?

Is there a way to:

  • Force AnkiHub to re-download media files?

  • Manually download only the missing images?

  • Or check whether these media files are actually available on AnkiHub?

I’ve already tried syncing a few times, but the files still remain missing.

Thank you in advance for any help or guidance!

I’ll help you troubleshoot your missing media files issue after syncing the AnKing deck via AnkiHub. Let me search for some relevant information first.

Hi Louisryandi,

Based on your screenshot and description, it looks like you’re missing several media files after updating your AnKing deck through AnkiHub. This is a common issue that can be resolved with a few troubleshooting steps.

First, check your media sync status:

  1. Open Anki and go to the AnkiHub add-on menu at the top
  2. Check what the media sync status says:
    • If it says “Downloading” - Your media is still being downloaded. It may take up to 60 minutes depending on your internet connection
    • If it says “Idle” - The media sync should be complete

If the media sync is complete but you’re still missing files:

  1. Force a media re-download:

    • Go to the AnkiHub add-on menu
    • Click on “Import Media
    • Select your AnKing deck
  2. Reset local changes:

    • Go to Browse
    • Click on the AnkiHub add-on tab at the top
    • Select “Reset all local changes
    • Choose the AnKing deck
  3. Run a media check:

    • After the above steps, go to Tools → Check Media again
    • This will show if any files are still missing

Other important considerations:

  • Make sure you’re subscribed to the official AnKing deck from AnkiHub (check here)
  • Verify that AnkiHub provides media for the specific fields where you’re seeing missing images. For the AnKing Step Deck, AnkiHub provides media for: Text, Extra, Sketchy, and Pixorize fields
  • If you’ve unprotected certain fields that AnkiHub doesn’t provide media for, this might explain the missing images

If the above steps don’t resolve your issue, let us know and we can explore more advanced troubleshooting options!

I have already tried downloading the media from AnkiHub using Import Media, and I also waited until the media sync status showed Idle. However, I am still seeing many Missing media files, as shown in my screenshot above.

I also ran Tools → Check Media, and there are still several missing image files referenced by the cards.

Is there any other way to re-download or recover these specific missing files?
Or could it be that these files are not included in the AnkiHub media package?

Thank you!

I’ll search for more specific information about missing media files in AnkiHub to help solve this issue.

Hi Louisryandi,

Based on your screenshots and the troubleshooting steps you’ve already tried, I understand why you’re still experiencing issues with missing media files. Let me help you understand what might be happening and provide some potential solutions.

Why Some Media Files Might Be Missing

Looking at the filenames you’ve shared (like “010120211258 (1).jpg”), these appear to be date-formatted filenames that are likely from specific resources. According to the official documentation, there’s a key reason why you might be missing certain media files:

AnkiHub only provides media for certain fields in the AnKing Step Deck:

  • The media provided includes: Text, Extra, Sketchy, and Pixorize fields
  • Some fields like First Aid and Additional Resources may reference images that aren’t included in the AnkiHub media package due to copyright considerations

It appears you’ve unprotected fields that reference media files not included in the AnkiHub media distribution, which explains why you’re seeing the “Missing” references after running Check Media.

Solutions to Try:

  1. Check which fields contain the missing references:

    • In the Browse window, search for one of your missing files (e.g., "010120211258 (1).jpg")
    • This will show you which notes and fields are referencing these missing files
    • If they’re in the First Aid or Additional Resources fields, this confirms the issue
  2. Protect fields with missing media:

    • If you don’t need these specific images, you can re-protect these fields
    • Go to the AnkiHub website, navigate to your deck settings, and protect the fields that reference missing media
  3. Create a full backup with media before further changes:

File > Export > "Anki collection package (.colpkg)" with "Include media" enabled

  4. If you had these images before:

    • If you previously had a version of the deck with these images:
      1. Export that older deck with media
      2. Use AnkiHub’s media import function to import from that .apkg file
  5. Batch edit to remove missing references:

    • If you don’t need these specific images, you can:
      1. Find all notes with these missing references
      2. Use the Batch Editing add-on
      3. Replace the HTML in those fields with nothing to remove the missing references

Important Note:

According to the official documentation:

The deck may include html that references images found in earlier versions of the deck with undetermined rights to use and as such may not include a useable image. We are actively working to replace everything in the deck with better images that we have permissions to share.

This suggests that some image references are intentionally not fulfilled due to copyright considerations.

Would you like me to provide more specific steps on any of these solutions?

Hello,

Looking at your screenshot, I can see you have the image for the “Extra” field. The field showing the broken image icon does not contain media by default.

The Physeo images are not publicly shared but are available here. If you don’t use Physeo, you can simply protect this field on AnkiHub. You can also delete the content in this field if you protect it on AnkiHub (to delete, download the batch edit add-on, select all notes, Edit→Batch Edit, select the Physeo field, select “Replace”).

Also, the fields First-Aid or Boards and Beyond are also protected by copyright and you will need a separate subscription to that resource. You can learn more about how this integration works here: McGraw Hill Integration FAQ

Just to clarify, Anki’s built-in “Check Media” tool can sometimes show a “missing files” report even when no media is actually missing from your AnkiHub decks. However, please reach out to us if you see any broken image icons in the “Text” or “Extra” fields.

You can find more information about the fields here: ✏️ What do all the fields mean in the AnKing Step Deck?

Let us know if you need help with anything else!
