I’m currently experiencing an issue with the media files in the AnKing V12 deck. Specifically, some of the image files appear and display correctly within the cards, while others fail to show up at all. This inconsistency is making it difficult to study efficiently, as I rely heavily on the visual content.
I have already confirmed that I’m using the latest version of Anki, and I imported the AnKing deck as instructed. However, the missing images either show up as broken links or do not appear at all. I’m not sure whether this is an issue with the media files not being properly included during import, file path discrepancies, or something else entirely.
Could you please help me troubleshoot what might be causing this? Are there any known issues with media syncing or any steps I can follow to ensure that all media files are correctly linked and displayed?

Some Images Not Displaying in AnKing V12 Deck – Troubleshooting
Hi there! This is a common issue with AnkiHub decks, especially the AnKing V12. Let me help you troubleshoot those missing images.
First, check your media sync status:
Open Anki and go to the AnkiHub add-on section
Check what the media sync status says:
If it says “Downloading” - your media hasn’t finished syncing yet. It can take up to 60 minutes depending on your internet connection.
If it says “Idle” - the sync should be complete, but we need to check other potential issues.
Common causes of missing images:
Protected fields: AnkiHub protects certain fields by default. Check if the missing images are in specific fields like “Physeo” which might be protected.
Media download incomplete: Sometimes the media sync process doesn’t complete properly even if it shows “Idle”.
Field content issues: You might have the image files but not the HTML references in the fields, or vice versa.
Steps to fix:
Reset local changes:
Go to Browse
Click on the AnkiHub add-on tab at the top
Click “Reset local changes”
Select the AnKing deck
Check protected fields:
For the AnKing Step Deck, AnkiHub downloads media for these fields: Text, Extra, Sketchy, and Pixorize
If images are missing in other fields, those might be protected
I ran the tool and found that there were 4000 cards missing. And it reads that The following files are referenced by cards, but were not found in the media folder. How do I fix this
I know it can be confusing, but most of the time, when Anki says files are missing, it doesn’t mean anything significant. I understand you’re noticing missing images because they either don’t appear or show up as broken. Have you tried the steps suggested by the bot?
Please make sure your fields are not protected, especially the “extra” field. You can find instructions here: How to Manage Protected Fields
Thanks for sharing those numbers, that helps narrow it down.
For the AnKing V12/Step deck, AnkiHub does not provide First Aid images. So:
The “missing = 12885” are mostly HTML references to First Aid (and possibly other copyrighted) images that are not included with the deck.
The “unused = 36606” are media files that exist in your media folder but are not currently referenced by any card. They’re usually not a problem and you can ignore them unless you’re very tight on disk space.
For First Aid specifically:
Decide if you actually need those images
If you don’t plan to use First Aid images, the simplest option is to remove those references so you don’t keep seeing broken-image icons:
In the Browser, filter to your AnKing deck.
Search for notes that use the First Aid field (e.g. deck:"AnKing..." "First Aid" or by adding the First Aid field as a column).
Select all → use a batch-edit add-on like Batch Editing to clear the First Aid field (replace its contents with nothing).
This will stop the broken-image icons from appearing, but you will not have First Aid images (which is expected unless you imported them yourself from an older deck/media pack you own).
If you previously had First Aid images from an older deck/media pack
Make sure those image files are actually in your current profile’s media folder.
If they are in an old .apkg or a folder:
Use AnkiHub → Import Media to import that media pack / older .apkg / folder.
After that, run Tools → Check Media again and see if the missing count drops.
Check that you aren’t expecting media that AnkiHub simply doesn’t provide
AnkiHub officially provides media (for the Step deck) mainly for: Text, Extra, Sketchy, Pixorize, and similar allowed fields.
First Aid, Additional Resources, and some other third‑party fields often only contain HTML references, and you’re expected to supply the media yourself (from your own purchased resources).
If you’re unsure whether your missing images are only First Aid or include other fields as well, can you:
Open a few cards with broken images
Tell me which fields those broken images are in (e.g. First Aid, Extra, Physeo, etc.)
From there I can suggest a more precise, field‑by‑field fix.
FirstAid is proprietary media, unfortunately, and so AnkiHub is not able to provide that media. The field is intended purely for personal use, as the field is protected by default for this reason
Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.
Thanks for sharing those numbers, that helps narrow it down.
The key point:
You mainly have images missing from First Aid.
Those images are not provided by AnkiHub due to copyright, so it’s expected to see a lot of missing media there unless you already had those images from a previous, legally‑obtained deck.
What your Check Media results mean
missing = 12885
→ These are HTML references to files that are not in your media folder. For you, that’s likely mostly First Aid images.
unused = 36606
→ These are files in your media folder that aren’t referenced by any card. That’s usually not a problem and can come from old decks or old versions.
Why First Aid images are missing
From the official docs:
AnkiHub only distributes media for fields like Text, Extra, Sketchy, Pixorize, etc.
First Aid (and sometimes “Additional Resources”) often contain references to images that:
Are not included with the AnKing V12 deck via AnkiHub, and
May have been present in older community/shared versions.
So even if AnkiHub is working perfectly, those First Aid images will still show as missing unless:
You previously had a version of the deck that included those images, and
You imported that media into your current profile.
What you can do
You have a few options:
If you don’t absolutely need the First Aid images:
Re‑protect or clean that field so the missing icons don’t bother you:
You can protect the First Aid field on AnkiHub and then unsubscribe / resubscribe for a full sync, or
Batch‑edit that field in Anki to remove the broken <img> tags (as suggested in the FAQ).
If you do want First Aid images:
You would need to:
Legally obtain a deck/media pack that contains those First Aid images, then
Import that media into Anki (via AnkiHub → Import Media or standard Anki import).
Even then, some references may remain broken if the filenames don’t match exactly.
Make sure everything else is actually synced correctly:
In the AnkiHub add‑on, confirm media sync status is Idle for the AnKing deck.
Run AnkiHub → Reset local changes for your AnKing deck once (you’ve likely done this already, but it can fix non–First-Aid media issues).
After that, check some random cards:
Are Text / Extra / Sketchy / Pixorize images showing correctly?
If yes, then the problem is almost certainly limited to First Aid / extra resources, which is expected.
If you can, please share:
A screenshot of one of the affected cards in the Browse window (showing the field name where the broken First Aid image is), and
Whether you ever used an older AnKing deck (before AnkiHub) on this profile.
With that, I can tell you more precisely whether there’s anything left to fix, or if what you’re seeing is just normal First Aid-media behavior.
Then in Anki: Browse → AnkiHub → Reset all local changes for the deck, so HTML references and fields update.
Interpreting your numbers
missing = 12885
Largely expected if those are First Aid / Additional Resources / other non‑licensed fields.
unused = 36606
These are files that exist in your media folder but are not referenced by any card. They are usually safe to ignore or delete if you want to clean up space.
To move forward
To give more concrete guidance, could you confirm:
Which exact field name shows the broken images (e.g., First Aid, Additional Resources, etc.)?
Are you currently using AnkiHub sync for this deck (subscribed to the official AnKing deck on AnkiHub)?
