Images are not appearing in the flashcards

Every time when I open a flashcard and it contains an image, it says “An image is missing: xxxxx.png More Info”. I researched and was instructed that I should hit “synchronise” button and wait until the loading button disappears for it to mean it synced not only the text, but also the pictures. However, it was not enough.

This usually means Anki has the card, but the media files (images) are not present on your computer. Let’s go step by step and narrow down where the problem is.

1. Check if the images exist at all in your collection

In Anki desktop:

1. Go to Tools → Check Media.
2. Let it run and look for:
   • “Missing files” list (these are the images Anki expects but can’t find).
   • “Unused files” list (files in your media folder that no card uses).

If your missing images (e.g. xxxxx.png) show up under Missing files, that means they’re not currently in your media folder.

• If this is a personal deck you made, those files might never have been added properly.
• If this is an AnkiHub deck, continue to the next step.

2. Confirm you’re actually subscribed and synced with AnkiHub

On Anki desktop:

1. AnkiHub add-on → AnkiHub
   Make sure:
   • You’re logged into the correct AnkiHub account.
   • You’re subscribed to the relevant shared deck.
2. In the same menu, click “Update from AnkiHub” for that deck:
   • Let it fully finish.
   • Watch for any error messages.

AnkiHub syncs cards/notes and structure, but media is still handled by AnkiWeb’s normal sync, so we need to make sure that part is working too.

3. Force a full media sync via AnkiWeb

The “synchronise” button in Anki must also sync media, not only text. Please try:

1. Click the sync button (top right).
2. If Anki asks about “upload” vs “download”, choose:
   • Download from AnkiWeb if you first added the deck and media on another device (or got it from someone else).
   • Upload to AnkiWeb if this computer is your main/only device that has the full deck and images (if you’re not sure they were ever on this computer, don’t choose upload).
3. After that finishes, click sync again and wait until:
   • The “Media sync complete” message appears (or no more “syncing media” line),
   • The sync button stops spinning.

Then reopen one of the problem cards and see if the image appears.

4. Are you using multiple devices?

If you study on phone and computer, check:

• On your other device, do the images show up?
  • If yes:
    • Sync that device first (upload to AnkiWeb),
    • Then on your computer, sync and choose download from AnkiWeb, and wait for media to finish.
  • If no on all devices: the images may never have been included in the original deck or import.

5. If this is an AnkiHub shared deck

If you got this deck through AnkiHub:

1. Tell me:
   • The name or link of the AnkiHub deck.
   • Whether images ever worked for you on any device.
2. Also let me know what you see in Tools → Check Media → Missing files (just one or two example filenames is enough).

With that info I can help determine if:

• The deck on AnkiHub is missing media for everyone (in which case we may need to flag it to the deck maintainers), or
• It’s a sync issue specific to your setup.

Hello, could you please provide more detail about which deck you are referring to? If you could send a screenshot of the flashcard with the missing image, that would also be helpful.

It’s actually multiple. None of them with images show the picture. I will name more than the ones I’ve attached screenshots:

First, we need to make sure the media sync has finished on your computer.

Please see this tutorial: Why is my deck missing images?

Since you have a lot of decks, the media sync can take a few hours to complete the first time.

Then, once the media is on your computer, click Sync to upload it to AnkiWeb. Keep Anki open while it uploads; this can take longer than downloading through AnkiHub, as upload speeds are typically slower than download speeds.

Once the sync is completely finished, open your mobile device and hit Sync, then wait for it to complete. This can also take a few hours. It only takes this long the first time because each deck can contain several gigabytes of media.
