Anking v12 not having all the cards (nothing to do with suspending cards or daily limit)

I’ve been using Anki for a while now on my own but I started using the Anking in preparation for shelf exams. I’ve recently learned that my v12 of the deck does not include all the cards and is missing some. I’ve unsubscribed and resubscribed to the deck, and as a last resort have even tried to export a friend’s version to try and update the missing cards but I am simply getting an error saying that there are a high number of notes (likely the ones I am missing) that cannot be imported. Is there any other way for me to get access to the cards I am missing?

This usually happens because the notes already exist in your collection, but:

  • they are in a different deck / subdeck structure, or
  • they are on a different note type / deck name than your friend’s, or
  • there is a conflict between your local AnKing deck and the AnkiHub-synced version.

When Anki says there are a ā€œhigh number of notes that cannot be imported,ā€ that almost always means ā€œthese notes already exist (same note ID), so I’m skipping them,ā€ not that you can’t ever get them.

To move forward, I’d suggest:

1. Confirm you’re actually on the AnkiHub version

In Anki Desktop:

  1. Go to AnkiHub → Manage AnkiHub Decks.
  2. Make sure you’re subscribed to the official AnKing Overhaul deck (usually called something like AnKing Overhaul for Step 1 & 2 (v12) on AnkiHub) and that it shows as Synced.
  3. If you previously downloaded AnKing from somewhere else (AnkiWeb, Google Drive, Reddit, etc.), you may have two copies:
    • one AnkiHub-synced
    • one ā€œofflineā€ copy
Make sure you’re looking at the AnkiHub-synced one when counting cards.

2. Check if cards are just in a different place or suspended

  1. In the Browser, select the AnKing deck (and all its subdecks).
  2. At the top, change the filter to:
    • deck:AnKing* (or the exact top-level deck name)
  3. Sort by Note Type and by Deck to see whether:
    • some notes are sitting in a different deck than your friend’s
    • some subdecks are missing or renamed
  4. Also check suspended cards:
    • Click the Suspended (yellow pause icon) in the sidebar or use the search is:suspended deck:"Your AnKing Deck".

Even though you mentioned it’s not about suspensions or limits, it’s worth double‑checking that the ā€œmissingā€ cards aren’t just sitting unsuspended in a different subdeck or filtered deck.

3. Compare note counts with your friend

To see what’s actually missing vs. just placed differently:

  1. In the Browser, search for one of the ā€œmissingā€ cards by text on front/back that you know your friend has.
  2. If nothing comes up:
    • That note truly isn’t in your collection → we need to pull it from AnkiHub.
  3. If something does come up but in a different deck / note type:
    • That’s why your import is complaining—same notes, different organization.

Ask your friend for:

  • The exact deck name
  • The note type name of a card you’re missing

Then verify if you have that note type / deck name.

4. Force your collection to match AnkiHub

If your AnkiHub-synced AnKing deck got heavily modified or corrupted, the cleanest fix is often:

  1. Back up everything:
    • File → Export…
    • Export all decks with ā€œInclude scheduling informationā€ checked and save that .colpkg somewhere safe.
  2. In AnkiHub → Manage AnkiHub Decks, Unsubscribe from the AnKing deck.
  3. When prompted, choose the option that lets you delete the local AnkiHub-configured deck copy (you can keep your backup from step 1).
  4. Close and reopen Anki.
  5. Re‑subscribe in AnkiHub and let it download a fresh copy of AnKing v12.
  6. Once it finishes syncing, check if those previously-missing cards now show up.

This avoids the ā€œhigh number of notes cannot be importedā€ problem because you’re not trying to merge a messy local copy with a clean one.

5. If you want, we can troubleshoot more precisely

Please reply here with:

  1. A screenshot of your AnKing deck list (showing subdecks and total card counts).
  2. A screenshot of AnkiHub → Manage AnkiHub Decks showing the AnKing entry.
  3. An example of one specific card you know is missing:
    • Text from the front or back of the card
    • Which subdeck and note type it’s in on your friend’s computer

With that info, we can usually tell if:

  • you’re missing entire note types,
  • cards are duplicated in a different deck, or
  • your local collection just needs a clean resubscribe to the AnkiHub version.

Hello,

First, please reset your local changes. Here is a tutorial: How to Reset Local Changes

Then, please go to the Browser and click on the #AK_Step1_v12 tag. It should display the number of cards or notes. Could you let me know what number you see in your Anki?
