So how can i protect any extra content i add to a card, say extra section, or the text itself⌠but also maintain my ability to get card updates like what if the update has something i really like but i also donât want to lose anything i added myself way back whenever i edited a card (sometimes it has images from my own lectures i like or i need it rephrased a certain way for my brain to understand it better), but i donât necessarily want to exclude myself from seeing what content DOES get updated. is there a way to do both of these things simultaneously?
I usually add all the additional info in one of the protected field (lecture notes for me), this way i can always have access to my personal notes and at the same time the card gets updated regularly without affecting my notes
You need to do this in one of the protected field, you cant do it in the text or EXTRA
I see, that makes sense.
What if I want to update the text to be more grammatically correct, or flow better in a way that makes better sense in my head? I often see missing oxford commas, the text is too wordy, or the text portion uses way too many transition words and articles that could be re-written to make a much more more concise card, etc⌠or sometimes I prefer to use abbreviations rather than the entire name of a hormone, for example, thereâs no need in my mind to have to read âThyroid-stimulating hormoneâ, when we all know what âTSHâ isâŚmy mind reads that quicker than the full spelled out hormone.
How do I go about changing that on my end so that I see what I want in the âtextâ portion of the card, without screwing it up for everyone else or without everyone else seeing my changes, but ALSO while making sure Iâm not blocking any updates to the âTextâ of other cards I havenât altered? Obviously not all the cards need edits, but there are some iâd like to fix for myself⌠I donât know how to do that without just completel protecting the âtextâ field in ankihub online. Is it not possible?
If you change your fields, no one else will see it. Only maintainers can do this by accepting changes so donât worry about that.
If you want to edit your own field, like changing thyroid stimulating hormone to TSH, you can do this and protect the field like you mentioned. However, you cannot receive updates unfortunately
I doesnt make sense to have both (you own version, and the updates) in the text field. I cant personally think of a way to combine the two other than giving you the possibility to see the updates and you choose to accept them or not.
As @Ahmed7 said, the best thing you can do for the cards that you really need them in a special format is to protect this card (you can protect the text only so you can still receive the updates in extra or vice versa) but then you will lose the updates in the field you protect
Got it, makes sense, thanks guys! Sorry with the unfamiliarity, Iâm just starting my use of Anking/Ankihub as I finish up M1 and thereâs a lot to take in.
Totally agree! It takes some adjustment and time to learn the system, but it is totally worth it!
I hate to ask, but what are the current recommended fields to protect?
Lecture Notes and Missed Questions make sense; but I previously also included Pathoma, B&B, and Pixorize. I believe I recall seeing something about the decks now supporting images and wasnât sure if any of these fields needed to be unlocked to allow for (new) images associated with the service to be added.
Thank you in advance
The fields that are automatically protected includes
- BNB
- Pathoma
- Lecture notes
- Missed questions
- FA
- Additional Resources
- Physeo
You can keep Pixorize unprotected if you wish to receive their media which we do sync.
There are no images however for the other fields that we sync so you can keep them protected and add whatever you like in there!
The wording is a little unclear and I just want to be sure: Will a subtag be automatically protected if you write down its parent tag name under the âprotected tagsâ section? For example, Iâm adding UBook tags to existing ankihub MCAT notes. âUBooksâ is my parent tag and my subtag is âBiologyâ (UBooks::Biology), if I write simply âUBooksâ under protected section will all cards with Biology subtag be protected as well?
I didnât realize my ads or edits would be removed with updates. After thousands of cards and all summer working through micro/pharm decks, all of my changes are gone. I add things like viral family, structure, etc. I also do voice recordings on some of the harder-to-pronounce bugs/drugs. All that work is just gone, and apparently, I canât set it to protect my entry without also losing the entire point of Ankihub. I appreciate all that AnkiHub does, and Iâm definitely not a coder; there has to be a way to set your updates so they donât impact user-stroke changes.
You can restore all your lost data by restoring from a backup, see how to do so here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHnUgNIJcR4&t=0s
You can choose to protect certain fields for certain cards as well, you donât have to protect the field globally if that works for your use case
Thanks for that information.
In addition, I have gone in under âCardsâŚâ and changed the auto reveal to âtrueâ for âlecture notes.â I have started placing my added info here and have it set to protect via the provided instructions. However, it seems that every time I sync, I have to go back in and redo this entire process again, including the protected fields. Do you have any idea why the âtrueâ keeps changing back to âfalse?â
Use the AnKing Note Types add-on to adjust it and then it shouldnât revert: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/952691989
This may be covered elsewhere, but the âLecture Notesâ is not an option under this add-on but are clickable on each card. Do I need to make an additional adjustment?
I added a tag to all âautoopen::lecture_notes.â after installing the add-on this has fixed my issue! Thanks and I will be sure to pass it on!
Thanks for the post! Iâve added a lot of personal tags and donât quite remember them all. If I want to protect any tags that Iâve added, is there a way to do that efficiently?
I could sort by date modified, and add a new tag to all of those, but that would include other edits as well. Any suggestions? Thanks!
