“Complete your profile” page won’t let me select a country

Every time I open the Anki app on my computer, an AnkiHub pop up comes on that says “Complete your profile to continue” where it has a terms & conditions check box and then asks for my name, username, and “where do you currently live”. However, when I try to select USA (or any country for that matter) or even type it out, the form will not let me complete that specific section and submit. Usually, I just close out of the page and do my Anki as usual but I’m concerned that this may be a reason that I’m not able to fully synch my deck’s optional tags. Any advice would be appreciated!

To help you with:

“Complete your profile” page won’t let me select a country

could you please reply with:

  1. What exactly happens when you try to select a country?

    • Is the dropdown empty?
    • Does it open but not register your click?
    • Do you get any error message?
  2. Where you’re seeing this:

    • On community.ankihub.net (this forum profile)?
    • Or on ankihub.net (AnkiHub web app account profile)?
  3. Your device + browser (e.g. Windows 11 + Chrome, macOS + Safari, iPhone + Safari, etc.).

In the meantime, a few quick things you can try:

  • Hard refresh the page (Ctrl+F5 on Windows, Cmd+Shift+R on Mac).
  • Try in a different browser (e.g. Chrome vs. Firefox) or in a private/incognito window.
  • If on mobile, try on a desktop browser if possible.

Once you share a bit more detail (and ideally a screenshot or short screen recording of you clicking the country field), I can give more precise steps or confirm if this looks like a bug we need to forward to the team.

The drop down isn’t empty & shows all countries, it just won’t let me select any of them. I’m using the anki app on my MacBook Air with macOS Sonoma 14.5

I’ve done a hard reset & nothing has helped, and on the anki hub web page, no pop up appears and my info is all on my account settings already.

I’ve attached a picture of me trying to select the country. (The video format isn’t accepted on this forum)

Thanks for the extra details and screenshot—that really helps.

This looks like a bug in the AnkiHub “Complete your profile” popup inside Anki on macOS, not something you’re doing wrong.

A few key points first:

  • Because your profile is already fully filled out on ankihub.net, this popup shouldn’t block syncing or optional tags. AnkiHub syncing is tied to your account, not to that specific country field.
  • So you can safely keep clicking “X” / closing the popup and your AnkiHub decks and optional tags should still sync as usual.

To try to get rid of the popup / work around the bug, please try these steps:

  1. Update everything to latest versions

    • Make sure you’re on the latest Anki desktop from https://apps.ankiweb.net.
    • Make sure you’re on the latest AnkiHub add‑on version:
      • In Anki: Tools → Add-ons → AnkiHub → Check for Updates.
  2. Temporarily disable the in‑Anki profile prompt

    • In Anki: Tools → Add-ons → AnkiHub → Config (Config or “Config / Configurations”).
    • Look for any option related to “show profile completion popup”, “onboarding”, or similar.
    • If you see it, set it to false/off, save, then restart Anki.
    • If there is no such option, skip this step (it just means it’s fully controlled server‑side).
  3. Log out and back into AnkiHub inside Anki

    • In Anki: Tools → AnkiHub → Log out.
    • Restart Anki.
    • Tools → AnkiHub → Log in again with the same account you used on ankihub.net.
    • Check whether the popup still appears and whether you can now select the country.
  4. Check that syncing + optional tags actually work

    • In Anki: Tools → AnkiHub → Sync.
    • On a shared AnkiHub deck, try toggling an optional tag on/off and sync again.
    • If this works, it confirms the profile popup is only cosmetic.

Because this very specific behavior (dropdown opens, shows countries, but doesn’t accept selection only in the in‑Anki popup on macOS Sonoma) didn’t show up in existing topics, it’s likely a new UI bug.

To help the team fix it, could you please also share:

  • Your Anki version (from Anki → About Anki on Mac).
  • Your AnkiHub add‑on version (from Tools → Add‑ons → AnkiHub).

Once you post those details, I’d recommend a moderator/dev flag this as a bug; in the meantime, you can keep using AnkiHub normally, since your account profile is already complete on the website and syncing shouldn’t be affected.

So the issue is that I don’t have optional tags even though I am subscribed to the ones on my deck through AnKing …

Thanks, that clarifies the concern—your real issue is optional tags not appearing, not just the popup.

A few things to check/try step‑by‑step:

1. Confirm the deck is actually linked to AnkiHub

In Anki on your Mac:

  1. Select the deck (e.g. your AnKing deck).
  2. Go to Tools → AnkiHub → Manage AnkiHub Decks.
  3. Make sure:
    • The deck is listed there.
    • Its status shows as something like “Linked / Subscribed”, not “Not linked”.

If it’s not linked, that’s why optional tags don’t show up. In that case:

  • Click “Link existing local deck” (wording may vary) and choose the correct AnkiHub deck.
  • Then run Tools → AnkiHub → Sync.

2. Verify optional tags on the AnkiHub website

On https://ankihub.net:

  1. Open the AnKing (or relevant) deck page.
  2. Go to the Optional Tags section.
  3. Confirm:
    • You are logged into the same account you use in Anki.
    • The tags you want are toggled ON (subscribed).

If they are off on the website, they will never appear locally.

3. Make sure you’re viewing tags correctly in Anki

Optional tags don’t appear as a separate “section”; they’re just normal tags on notes/cards once downloaded.

In Anki:

  1. Open the Browser.
  2. In the left sidebar, click “Tags”.
  3. Look for tags that match the optional tags you subscribed to (e.g. ::Optional::... or other naming used by AnKing/AnkiHub).
  4. If you don’t see them, try:
    • Tools → AnkiHub → Sync again.
    • Then restart Anki and look in the Browser once more.

4. Check that AnkiHub sync is running without errors

After you run Tools → AnkiHub → Sync:

  • Watch for any error message at the bottom of the Anki window or in a popup.
  • If you see something like “failed to authenticate” or other errors, that would explain why your optional tag choices aren’t coming through.

If you do get an error, please copy the exact text and paste it here.

5. Why the “Complete your profile” popup is almost certainly not the cause

Because:

  • Your profile is complete on ankihub.net.
  • AnkiHub sync + optional tags are controlled by your account and deck subscription, not by the country field.
  • The popup only appears inside Anki and doesn’t show on the website.

So the missing optional tags are almost certainly due to linking/sync, not that country dropdown bug.

Next info that will help narrow this down

Please reply with:

  1. Anki version (Anki → About Anki).
  2. AnkiHub add‑on version (Tools → Add‑ons → AnkiHub → View).
  3. A screenshot of:
    • Tools → AnkiHub → Manage AnkiHub Decks for your AnKing deck.
    • The Optional Tags section from the AnkiHub web page for that deck (showing some tags toggled on).

With that, we can tell whether this is:

  • A linking issue,
  • A sync/auth issue,
  • Or a true bug where optional tags aren’t being applied even though everything is set up correctly.

Hello,

Please follow these steps to get everything working:

  1. Update Anki:
Please ensure you are on the latest version of Anki. You can download it here: https://apps.ankiweb.net/.
After downloading, simply run the downloaded file to update your application.

  2. Update AnkiHub in Safe Mode:
Start Anki in safe mode by holding down the Shift key while you open it.
On your Anki main screen, go to Tools > Add-ons > Check for Updates.
After the update is complete, please restart Anki.

  3. Configure Your Profile:

  1. Final Restart: Close and re-open Anki normally (without holding Shift) to see if you’re all set.

After doing the step above, follow these two tutorials to reset local changes (How to Reset Local Changes) and reset changes to optional tags (How to Reset Local Changes to an Optional Tag Group).

Let me know if this solves your issue!

I updated anki and still have no optional tags appearing even though I’m subscribed to them on AnkiHub

When I tried the tutorial from the link for resetting optional tag groups, i got a pop up that says I don’t have any ankihub optional tag groups configured yet

Before we troubleshoot this any further, please try this one step, as it might solve your problem: on your Anki main screen, go to AnkiHub and click Sync. This should download your optional tag group.

Your tag will be here:

If this first step doesn’t help, please follow the steps below.

  1. Has the issue with the “Complete Profile” page been resolved?

  2. Besides updating Anki, you will also need to update the AnkiHub add-on.

  • On your Anki main screen, go to Tools > Add-ons > Check for Updates.
  • After the update is complete, please restart Anki.
  1. Before trying to reset optional tag groups, you need to reset your local changes.

Once you have completed all of these steps, please select the deck and send me a screenshot showing how many cards are in it, just so we can verify you have everything.

I see here that you are currently subscribed to the optional tag TAMHSCSOM. Is that the correct one?
