Optional tags is not showing up

The optional tags is not coming up on my left sidebar. And when I reset all local changes to a deck, it says I don’t have any tags configured, despite downloading my school-specific tags.

Issue with Optional Tags Not Showing in Sidebar

When optional tags are properly configured, they should appear in the sidebar of your Anki browser under “AnkiHub_Optional” as shown in this documentation image:

Possible Solutions

  1. Ensure you’ve properly subscribed to the tags:

    • Find the deck you want to use with optional tags
    • Click the 3 dots in the top right
    • Select “Manage Optional Tags”
    • Check the box for the school-specific tags you want
    • Click save
    • Sync AnkiHub
  2. Verify the sync was successful:

    • After subscribing to optional tags, make sure to perform a complete AnkiHub sync
    • Check that there were no sync errors
  3. If you get the “no tags configured” message when resetting:

    • This typically means you haven’t successfully subscribed to any optional tag groups for that deck, or
    • The subscription process wasn’t completed properly
    • The optional tag group might not be available for the specific deck you’re using

Next Steps

  1. Try re-subscribing to the school-specific tags following the steps above
  2. After subscribing, perform a full AnkiHub sync
  3. Restart Anki completely
  4. Check the browser sidebar again for the AnkiHub_Optional section

If you’re still experiencing issues after trying these steps, please provide more specific information about:

  • Which deck you’re trying to use with the optional tags
  • The exact steps you’ve taken to subscribe to the tags
  • Any error messages you see during the process

For more detailed guidance, you can also watch the AnkiHub Optional Tags tutorial video.

what do you mean by “full AnkiHub sync” is that just the sync button in anki?

Hi,

Please try just clicking sync in the AnkiHub add-on and then resetting local changes (How to Reset Local Changes and How to Reset Local Changes to an Optional Tag Group)
