I personally get no use from the charts and tables that are put in the extra field. It instead helps me to anchor the flash card in my memory if I see a picture of pathology, or at least a sketchy drawing. So when a card updates and a new chart or table now supercedes a clinical picture or cartoon, it actually degrades the effectiveness of the card for me (epidemiology cards being the exception). I’m sure there are other people who feel the exact opposite as me, and prefer tables and charts to look at. It would be really nice if picture types that were added to cards were grouped, and groups could be checked or unchecked from your deck somehow. Going through every card with a table or chart, deleting it, and then protecting the extra field, is incredibly time consuming for thousands of cards.
If there are particiular cards that you know you like the pictures for, the quickest way is probably by just protecting those fields within your personal deck.
To do this:, go to the browser menu >right click the card you want to protect > AnkiHub: Protect fields >
>Select Extra > OK
This will make it so that even if that card gets updated, the extra field will not change on that card. If you want it for all your cards, you can select multiple cards at a time within the browswer menu and do this in one step.
Hope this helps!
I really appreciate you taking the time to post this workaround. I have done that a couple of times, and there are three problems I can think of off the bat.
-
If guidelines or supplemental information in the Extra field get updated, I will miss these updates.
-
Some cards that don’t have clinical pictures I like, later get updated with good ones, and some get updated with charts that don’t help me. So blanket protecting is more or less off the table.
-
Protecting fields for every card I like is a laborious and time consuming and I need to spend that time studying instead.
So it would be awesome to have a box check in settings for “Clinical/Pathology pictures only” or something along those lines.
