Downloading the ANKING deck and uploading the deck to my Anki desktop

Hello,

I wanted to know if it possible for me to download these anki decks and then upload to my Anki desktop or do I have to use these decks through the ankihub app?

The version of Anki I am using is Version ⁨2.1.49 and a lot of my add-ons that I use probably will not be available if I update my Anki to the newest version.

Lastly, I am already using Anki V12, but it is an earlier version of V12 (Sketchy Medicine tags were not completed), if I do download the deck to my computer or decide to use the deck via ankihub, I want to make sure that I do not lose the data of all the cards I matured or in the learning phase.

Please advise.

You can absolutely keep using the AnKing V12 deck on your desktop and protect your current progress – you don’t have to use it only through the AnkiHub web app. How you proceed depends on what exactly you want:

1. Using the AnKing V12 deck without AnkiHub (desktop only)

If you just want the deck on your computer and don’t care about future community updates:

  • Download the latest .apkg of V12 from a trusted AnKing source (e.g. the official links they provide).
  • Important: Import it into the same profile that already has your older V12.
  • When importing, Anki will:
    • Keep your existing scheduling (mature/learning cards),
    • Add new notes/cards,
    • Update changed notes if the note type and note IDs match.

This is the same behavior as with any updated shared deck. As long as you don’t delete your existing deck or change note types in a strange way, you shouldn’t lose your progress.

To be extra safe:

  1. Make a backup: File → Export → Anki Collection Package (.colpkg)
  2. Also check File → Switch Profile → Open backup… so you know how to restore if needed.

2. Using the deck with AnkiHub (to receive ongoing updates)

With AnkiHub you get continuous fixes and new cards, but your desktop remains the main place you study.

Basic flow (see: :star: Getting Started):

  1. Keep your current collection & scheduling

    • You do not need to delete your current AnKing V12 deck.
    • Your existing reviews (mature/learning) can be preserved.

  2. Install the AnkiHub add-on

    • You’re on Anki 2.1.49, which is quite old.
    • Many newer add‑ons (including recent AnkiHub versions) officially support newer Anki versions.
    • You’ll likely need to update Anki to use the latest AnkiHub add‑on reliably.

    If you’re worried about your other add‑ons breaking:

    • Make a full backup first (File → Export → .colpkg).
    • Consider testing the upgrade in a separate profile first:
      • File → Switch Profile → Add
      • Import a copy of your collection and test your add‑ons there.

  3. Subscribe to the AnKing Step Deck (V12) on AnkiHub

  4. Protect your progress & edits

3. About your existing early V12 + Sketchy tags

Still, always:

  1. Make a full .colpkg backup before:

    • Updating Anki

    • Pick a few cards you know are mature,

    • Confirm their intervals and due dates are unchanged.

4. Your specific situation (recommendation)

Given what you wrote:

  • If you must stay on 2.1.49 and can’t risk breaking add‑ons:

    • Use the plain .apkg route (Section 1).
    • You won’t get live AnkiHub updates, but you keep your current Anki setup and progress.

  • If you’re okay testing an upgrade:

There isn’t an AnkiHub app, really. Just for clarity.

All of the decks on AnkiHub are typically transferred to a desktop computer for use within Anki. This is the normal use-case

That can present a potential pitfall, in that most add-ons (including the AnkiHub add-on) are unlikely to support an Anki version that out of date.

2.1.49 is couple/few years outdated at this point, and it is fairly likely that it will run into conflict with many (most?) modern add-ons

In either case, you won’t lose data or cards. In all cases, you can always use Anki’s backup function to make a backup beforehand to ensure that this is the case

Thank you so much for response! Currently, I am syncing my current deck and then I will export my deck before I update anki.

Once I update my anki, will I be able to go back to an older version if most of the add-ons I use are outdated? The add-on that I use the most is “more answers” (https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/2089145805). The one I used to use is no longer supported anymore (https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1550991760)

If I want to download the V12 update .apkg file, where can I find it and since I subscribe to Ankihub, can I download it from there? I also have all my images included. If I sync to Ankihub, how do I protect my fields to make sure the images are still there and those cards that need images will get updated?

I’m afraid I can’t make any claims there, one way or the other. That might be a question better answered by an Anki developer, or the author of the add-on in question, unfortunately

There aren’t any .apkg files available, unfortunately. Everything on AnkiHub syncs via the AnkiHub add-on, directly from the Ankihub servers to your local collection
