You can absolutely keep using the AnKing V12 deck on your desktop and protect your current progress â you donât have to use it only through the AnkiHub web app. How you proceed depends on what exactly you want:
1. Using the AnKing V12 deck without AnkiHub (desktop only)
If you just want the deck on your computer and donât care about future community updates:
- Download the latest
.apkgof V12 from a trusted AnKing source (e.g. the official links they provide). - Important: Import it into the same profile that already has your older V12.
- When importing, Anki will:
- Keep your existing scheduling (mature/learning cards),
- Add new notes/cards,
- Update changed notes if the note type and note IDs match.
This is the same behavior as with any updated shared deck. As long as you donât delete your existing deck or change note types in a strange way, you shouldnât lose your progress.
To be extra safe:
- Make a backup:
File â Export â Anki Collection Package (.colpkg)- Also check
File â Switch Profile â Open backupâŚso you know how to restore if needed.
2. Using the deck with AnkiHub (to receive ongoing updates)
With AnkiHub you get continuous fixes and new cards, but your desktop remains the main place you study.
Basic flow (see:
Getting Started):
-
Keep your current collection & scheduling
- You do not need to delete your current AnKing V12 deck.
- Your existing reviews (mature/learning) can be preserved.
-
Install the AnkiHub add-on
- Youâre on Anki 2.1.49, which is quite old.
- Many newer addâons (including recent AnkiHub versions) officially support newer Anki versions.
- Youâll likely need to update Anki to use the latest AnkiHub addâon reliably.
If youâre worried about your other addâons breaking:
- Make a full backup first (
File â Export â .colpkg). - Consider testing the upgrade in a separate profile first:
File â Switch Profile â Add- Import a copy of your collection and test your addâons there.
-
Subscribe to the AnKing Step Deck (V12) on AnkiHub
- Follow the steps in the AnKing V12 wiki:
Introduction to the AnKing Step Deck (V12). - Then connect your existing AnKing V12 deck to the AnkiHub deck (instead of importing a fresh copy and starting over).
- Follow the steps in the AnKing V12 wiki:
-
Protect your progress & edits
The FAQ here is very relevant:
AnKing Step Deck FAQs
It includes:- âDoes AnkiHub protect my card scheduling?â
- âCan I protect my own edits when subscribingâŚ?â
In short:
- You can protect scheduling so AnkiHub updates donât reset your intervals.
- You can also protect your personal edits (e.g., extra fields, personal tags).
3. About your existing early V12 + Sketchy tags
You mentioned:
âI am already using Anki V12, but it is an earlier version of V12 (Sketchy Medicine tags were not completed)⌠I want to make sure that I do not lose the data of all the cards I matured or in the learning phase.â
This is exactly the kind of scenario AnkiHub is built to handle:
- Your existing review history stays in your local collection.
- AnkiHub syncs content changes (fields, tags, new cards, etc.), not your personal scheduling.
- As long as you donât start over with a totally fresh profile or delete your current deck, you should not lose mature/learning data.
Still, always:
-
Make a full .colpkg backup before:
- Updating Anki
- Installing / configuring AnkiHub
- Connecting your deck
-
After connecting to AnkiHub, run a small test:
- Pick a few cards you know are mature,
- Trigger an AnkiHub sync,
- Confirm their intervals and due dates are unchanged.
4. Your specific situation (recommendation)
Given what you wrote:
-
If you must stay on 2.1.49 and canât risk breaking addâons:
- Use the plain .apkg route (Section 1).
- You wonât get live AnkiHub updates, but you keep your current Anki setup and progress.
-
If youâre okay testing an upgrade:
- Make a backup,
- Update Anki to a supported version,
- Install the AnkiHub addâon,
- Connect your existing V12 deck to AnkiHub while protecting scheduling & edits (Section 2 & FAQ links).
If you can share:
- Your OS (Windows/Mac/Linux),
- Whether youâre willing to update Anki,
- Whether you already have AnkiHub installed or not,
I can outline stepâbyâstep instructions tailored exactly to your setup.
