Hi! I use Boards and Beyond tags under Anking step 1. I just noticed that the tags (by system) have been duplicated in many places (ex. two tags for BB_GI: BB_09_GI and BB_10_GI). this causes cards to spread out between the two tags. Im worried I have just been unsuspending cards in “09” and missing cards in “10”. This is happening to my friend as well. Any ideas? I just updated my anki but im not sure if this was happening before or not.
I’ll help you understand what’s happening with your Boards and Beyond tags in the AnKing Step 1 deck. Let me search for some relevant information that might explain the duplicate tags issue you’re experiencing.

Hi there! This issue with duplicate Boards and Beyond (BB) tags is something we’ve seen before with the AnKing Step 1 deck. The BB tags in the AnKing deck have been organized by chapters/sections, and it appears there might have been some changes in how these tags were structured between different versions.
Why You’re Seeing Duplicate BB Tags
Based on your description, you’re seeing duplicate tags like BB_09_GI and BB_10_GI. This likely happened due to one of these reasons:
-
AnkiHub Updates: When the deck was updated through AnkiHub, the tag organization might have changed but your old tags weren’t automatically removed.
-
Tagging System Updates: The Boards and Beyond video organization might have changed between versions, resulting in updated tags while the old ones remained.
How to Fix This
There are a few ways to handle this:
Option 1: Protect and Reorganize Your Tags
If you’ve made progress with your current tags and don’t want to lose your work:
- First, determine which tag system is the most current (likely the BB_10_GI in your example)
- Create a filtered deck that includes both sets of tags to see all cards
- Unsuspend any missing cards you find
- Consider using AnkiHub’s tag protection feature to manage this going forward:
- Go to the AnkiHub website → your deck → click the 3 dots → “Manage Protected Data”
- Add your personal tags to protect them from being overwritten
Option 2: Reset Your Tags and Start Fresh
If you’re okay with starting over with tagging:
- Go to the browser in Anki
- Find the AnkiHub add-on tab at the top
- Select “Reset All Local Changes”
- This will restore everything to what AnkiHub has (unless you’ve specifically protected fields)
For the Future
To prevent this from happening again:
- Consider protecting your personal tags using the AnkiHub protection feature
- If you’re making significant tag changes, document what you’re doing
- Regularly check for cards that might be duplicated across similar tags
Would you like more specific guidance on either of these approaches?
these are not my personal tags. How do i fix without losing all my data and progress
here are screenshots of the two different GI BB tags (as you can see there are lots of other duplications). most of the time one of the tags has barely any cards and the other has a lot.
Hello,
I would be happy to help.
You might take a look at both tags: as you can see in the images you shared one tag has quite a few cards and the other has very few cards. Typically this indicates that you have some older cards in your collection
You can either delete these older cards, or re-tag them to remove the duplicate tagging, or whatever you might prefer. Once the tag has been removed and/or deleted, it should disappear for you.
Give that a shot, let me know how you fare, and we’ll go from there and hopefully we can get you squared away.
So do I just select all the cards in BB_09_GI and add the BB_10_GI tag? and then delete the BB_09_GI tag? Deleting things seems scary….
Also if this is happening for many other systems do i have to do this over and over?
Yep, as listed above you could outright delete those cards, or you can re-tag them. Either can/will work
Yup, that should do the trick.
No need for it to be scary. Anki makes numerous backups of your collection every day, often a dozen or more.
If you have multiple duplicates in your local collection and you’d like to remove all of them, you may have to do this more than once.
Additionally, you can make sure that your existing tags are as updated as they should be by pushing a corroboration check of your local collection against the server copy: Resetting Local Changes
This won’t remove duplicates, but it will double-check and ensure that all of your tags are currently up to date
Thank you!!!
