How do you handle missed questions in anki?

Hi everyone :raised_hand:

When I miss a question in anki, I flag the card red. Right now I have about 70 red-flagged cards from my last NBME test. My question is: what’s the best way to handle these cards?

The AnKing video from 2021 says to create a filtered deck for missed cards that are due today. But what about cards that aren’t due for a long time, or cards I’ve never unsuspended (so they’ll never be due)?

Should I just review all 70 cards every day until I’ve learned them? And what should I do if I take another NBME and add even more missed cards? Should I study all the previous ones plus the new ones daily?

I hope this makes sense — I’m trying to keep things simple. Sorry if this question sounds basic, and thanks for any advice!

Hello,

There’s not one ‘best’ way to handle missed questions, really. Obviously you’ll want to keep track of cards that are relevant and likely review that information. This can be done by creating a separate subdeck, or custom-filtered deck, or using flags, or some combination of the above.

If the card is suspended and the information is useful for you, you might want to unsuspend it.

Hard to give a ton super specific advice beyond the obvious which is that, if the information is useful and you know that you need to review, it you should make sure to review it. That might mean unsuspending those cards, or setting them aside in a separate subdeck, or adding entirely new ones. Or, again, a combination of the above. :-).

It sort of falls into the same category as before in that there’s not ‘one right’ way to go about it.

For example, one of my colleagues uses a lot of custom-filtered decks whereas I basically never use them. Neither is right, or wrong; he’s comfortable with his system and it works well for him and I’ve developed a comfort zone with my system and it works well for me. Probably the best answer is to try out and determine a few workflows and find one that works for you.

Happy to help anytime. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you so much for the quick reply! I really appreciate it.

I’ll start by trying a filtered deck to see how it feels. I plan to set it to “reschedule cards based on my answers in this deck.”

What confused me while watching the AnKing video was why he uses a filtered deck when the cards are due on the same day anyway. Wouldn’t just flagging them be enough to recognize them? I thought maybe filtered decks make you review a card more often somehow, which could make them more useful after getting a question wrong in UWorld/ NBME. This is seemingly not the case as I understand now.

I just wanted a way to drill in a missed question rather than waiting for it to be due (which, as you know, could range anywhere from a day to several years haha).

Thanks again for your help!
