I changed the numbers on the V12 step 2 tags (for shelf exams) 2 days ago and when I checked today, there were duplicate decks with different numbers and new cards. I put the new cards in my new numbered ones and deleted the other tags but I think I should not have done this⌠Will I still get updates? How do I reverse this?

Youâre right to doubleâcheck this; tag changes can definitely affect how V12 step decks behave with AnkiHub.
Based on how AnkiHub works:
- AnkiHub only tracks updates on the original shared deck (the one you subscribed to).
- Tags themselves donât control whether you get updates; updates are tied to:
- the deck youâre subscribed to, and
- the card IDs in that deck.
So:
- If you only renamed or edited tags (including the
V12::Step 2::...style tags), you will still get updates. AnkiHub does not overwrite your custom tags. - If you moved cards between decks or deleted cards, thatâs more risky:
- Moving cards into a different deck than the subscribed V12 deck can make it harder to see/update them correctly.
- Deleting cards means those specific cards will no longer receive updates.
The âduplicate decks with different numbersâ you saw are very likely different tag groupings/filtered decks or different copies/variants of the same AnKing Step 2 content, not extra AnkiHub subscriptions. Without screenshots itâs hard to be exact, but hereâs what you can safely do now:
1. Confirm youâre still subscribed + syncing
In Anki Desktop:
- Go to AnkiHub â Manage Subscriptions.
- Find your AnKing V12 Step 2 subscription.
- Make sure:
- It shows as Subscribed.
- The status for âLast syncâ doesnât show any errors.
If the subscription is intact and syncing, you will continue to receive updates for any cards that still exist in that deck (even if their tags were changed).
2. How to âundoâ/clean up safely
Since tags donât affect updates, what you mainly want to undo is any card moves or deletions.
a) If you moved cards into other decks
- Identify the main V12 Step 2 deck youâre subscribed to (e.g. something like
AnKing V12 Step 2). - For cards you moved out:
- Use Browse, search for those decks/tags, and move those cards back into the official V12 Step 2 deck via:
Browse â select cards â Change Deck⌠â choose the original V12 deck.
- Use Browse, search for those decks/tags, and move those cards back into the official V12 Step 2 deck via:
Once theyâre back in the subscribed deck, future updates will continue to apply normally.
b) If you deleted tags only
- You donât have to undo this for AnkiHub to work.
- If you want the original tag numbers back:
- The most reliable method (if things feel really messy) is:
- Backup your profile first (
File â Create Backup). - Unsubscribe from the V12 Step 2 deck in AnkiHub.
- Delete that deck in Anki (only if youâre sure you donât have important personal edits).
- Resubscribe and sync the deck fresh from AnkiHub.
- Backup your profile first (
- The most reliable method (if things feel really messy) is:
This gives you the original tags/structure again, but youâll lose edits on that deck unless you back them up and manually merge.
c) If you actually deleted cards
- Deleted cards wonât receive updates anymore.
- To restore them, your options are:
- Restore from an Anki backup (if you made one from before the changes).
- As above, do a full resubscribe:
- Backup profile.
- Unsubscribe + delete the deck.
- Resubscribe and download it again.
What I recommend for you right now
Because you wrote âI put the new cards in my new numbered ones and deleted the other tags,â it sounds like you mainly changed tags and maybe moved cards between decks, rather than deleting cards.
So:
- Donât panic â you likely still get updates.
- Check AnkiHub â Manage Subscriptions to ensure the V12 Step 2 deck is still subscribed and syncing.
- If you only altered tags: you can leave it as is; updates will still come.
- If you moved cards out of the main V12 Step 2 deck:
- Move them back into that original deck so everything stays under the subscribed deck.
If you can, please reply with:
- A screenshot of your deck list showing the âduplicateâ Step 2 decks.
- A screenshot from AnkiHub â Manage Subscriptions showing the V12 Step 2 entry.
With that, I can give you very specific âclickâbyâclickâ steps tailored to your exact setup.
Hello,
Just to make sure I understand the issue:
- Did you rename a tag from the AnKing Step Deck? This is not recommended. If you want a custom tag system, you should create new tags for personal use and protect them so they do not get overwritten: How to Protect Personal Tags from being Overwritten - #2
- Did duplicated decks appear afterward? Please send a screenshot so I can better understand what you are seeing.
Could you please explain this in more detail? What new cards, what do you mean by ânew numbered ones,â and which tags did you delete?
If you think you messed anything up, you can simply reset your local changes: How to Reset Local Changes. This will ensure you are not missing any cards or tags. However, if you have duplicates, this process will not delete them. You can identify and delete those later.
Hi! Thank you so much for your reply. I deleted the tags after moving the cards into the ones where I changed the numbers because I didnât want two tags for each. I attached a screenshot of what I mean by changing the numbers. But doing this all the time will get annoying and now I want to change back. Note - I did not change decks!
Okay, I understand.
This was the original tag organization:
If you want a new organization, you will need to create personal tags and protect them on AnkiHub so they do not get overwritten. It is not recommended to edit any pre-existing tags. If you do, the old tags you deleted will likely reappear the next time you sync, leaving you with duplicate tags.
Instead, create a new tag, select all the cards under the pre-existing tags, and add your personal tag to them. The cards will then have both the pre-existing AnKing tags and your personal tags. You can then use your personal tags for studying. Make sure to protect your personal tags by following this tutorial: How to Protect Personal Tags from being Overwritten - #2
To get everything back to how it was, you can reset your local changes (How to Reset Local Changes) and delete any duplicate tags you created. After that, you can start fresh and follow the steps above.

You are extremely helpful - thank you very much. I only changes the numbers to follow the order of my clerkships. But I would much rather just follow whatever you guys do. I will reset local changes right now and circle back!
Edit: it worked! Thank you again, I will never mess with the tags again ![]()
