Hi everyone!
I am currently using the V11 of Anking and thinking about updating to V12. I have made so many corrections, cards deleting and editing.
Can I merge the two versions together?
In the sunscreen below I arranged the decks in the order I like. For example, what will happen to my neurology deck and its content for V11 after updating to V12? Will it just modify the cards? Or will it leave them and them I have to restudy from V12?
I hope I cleared my point

Hi there! I understand your concerns about updating from AnKing V11 to V12 while preserving your edits and deck organization. Good news - this process is designed to maintain your progress and changes!
How Updating from V11 to V12 Works
When you update from V11 to V12 through AnkiHub, the system will:
- Preserve your study progress - All your review history and scheduling information stays intact
- Keep your edits - Your deletions, corrections, and card edits will be preserved
- Update the content - V12 includes over 500,000+ changes made in the past 6 months, including updated guidelines, video tags, and images
What Happens to Your Existing Deck Structure
Looking at your screenshot, you have a customized organization with your Neurology deck. When updating:
- Your existing deck structure will be maintained
- The cards will be updated in place (same IDs are matched)
- You won’t need to restudy cards you’ve already learned
How to Update While Preserving Your Organization
According to the documentation, when upgrading from V11:
- Subscribe to the AnKing V12 deck on AnkiHub
- The system will match all notes with previous note IDs in your old V11 deck
- Your cards will be updated in their current location - your Neurology deck contents will be updated in place
If you want to keep V12 cards in a separate deck while preserving your progress:
- Create a new deck (e.g., “AnKing V12”)
- Move your AnKing cards to this new deck (instructions in the documentation link)
- Configure AnkiHub to place new cards in your preferred deck
Benefits of Updating to V12
V12 offers significant improvements:
- Updated medical guidelines
- Improved video tags and images
- Real-time updates through AnkiHub
For more information on the specific updates, you can check the update log.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions about the update process.
Hello,
I would be happy to help. ![]()
When you update, the two will naturally merge automatically. v12 is not a separate deck, but rather an update to v11, and so your cards will be updated in place.
Thus, it will modify your existing cards (and add new ones, if there are new cards to add). As far as card location, and/or subdeck organization, those will not be affected.
Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with. ![]()
That answers my question perfectly. I have one more question though, do I need to delete the v11 tags after updating?
Thanks a lot!
I’ll help you understand what happens with tags when updating from AnKing V11 to V12.
When you update from V11 to V12, you don’t need to delete the V11 tags after updating. Here’s why:
-
The update process is designed to handle tags appropriately - the system will update the tags as needed when transitioning from V11 to V12.
-
The AnkiHub system maintains the tagging structure automatically as part of the update process. Any tag updates that are part of the V12 release will be applied to your cards.
-
Your custom tags (ones you’ve added yourself) will be preserved alongside the deck’s official tags.
Using tags is actually more flexible than using subdecks for organization. As explained in the Anki documentation, tags allow you to categorize cards in multiple ways simultaneously, while a card can only belong to one deck. This gives you more powerful filtering and organization options.
If you want to learn more about effective tag organization in Anki, you might find the documentation on Using Tags helpful.
Is there anything specific about the tagging system you’re concerned about after updating?
You don’t have to delete them, but most people do. They’ll mostly just take up space, and be both a bit redundant and a lot out-dated. There’s not much to be gained by keeping them, really
