Upgrading to v12 from v11 and managing decks

previously had v11. got ankihub then subscriped to anking step deck and synced. I now have v11 and v12 tags. can i delete the v11 tags? worried that there are cards in both and deleting the v11 will also delete important ones from v12.

additionally..

used anki barely years ago but moved a bunch of cards into a different deck while i was in m1/m2. is there a way to move those cards back to their original deck/subdeck?

plan is to delete that deck i made before, delete v11 tags, then resync with ankihub to restore everything fresh including the cards i had deleted. is there anything wrong with that approach?

You’re right to pause before deleting things—there are a couple of important nuances here.

1. About the v11 vs v12 tags

  • The v11 / v12 tags themselves are just tags, so deleting a tag does not delete the cards.
  • The real risk is if:
    • You still have old v11 cards that aren’t actually part of your v12 AnkiHub deck, or
    • You’re using v11 tags to identify cards you still care about.

Because I don’t see a definitive forum post confirming this specific setup, I’d suggest a safer workflow:

  1. In the Browser, search for:
    • tag:v11 -tag:v12
    • This shows cards that only have v11 tags (not v12).
    • Decide whether you still need these or if they’re duplicates.
  2. If you’re happy with your v12 setup and don’t need v11 organization anymore, you can:
    • Remove the v11 tags from cards (right‑click the tag in the browser → “Remove from all cards”), after you confirm there aren’t any “v11‑only” cards you still need.
  3. If you’re unsure, it’s safer to:
    • Keep the v11 tags for now, finish your cleanup and sync with AnkiHub, then revisit removing them later.

2. Moving old cards back to their original deck/subdeck

Pure Anki behavior here:

  • If those cards still have a tag structure or naming that indicates where they came from (e.g. ::AnKing::Step 1::…), you can:

    1. Open the Browser, filter by that tag or search term.
    2. Select all (Ctrl/Cmd+A).
    3. Right‑click → Change Deck… → choose the original AnKing/AnkiHub deck/subdeck they belong to.
  • If there’s no remaining information about their original deck, Anki can’t automatically “remember” where they came from. In that case you’d either:

    • Manually move them into the correct subdeck(s) based on tags/names, or
    • Let the upcoming “fresh” resync recreate them (see below).

3. Your proposed plan

plan is to delete that deck i made before, delete v11 tags, then resync with ankihub to restore everything fresh including the cards i had deleted. is there anything wrong with that approach?

General idea: Good, but adjust for safety:

  1. Back up first

    • File → Export → Anki Collection Package (*.colpkg) with “Include scheduling information” checked.
    • Keep this somewhere safe in case anything goes wrong.
  2. Remove your custom “M1/M2” deck

    • If those cards are all originally from the AnKing/AnkiHub deck and you want to start fresh:
      • Move any truly custom cards you made yourself into a separate “My Custom Cards” deck.
      • Then delete the old M1/M2 deck.
  3. Handle v11 tags cautiously

    • Only remove v11 tags after checking tag:v11 -tag:v12 in the Browser, so you know what will be “orphaned” from that labeling.
    • Removing tags is safe (no card deletion), but make sure you don’t rely on them for anything important first.
  4. Resync with AnkiHub

    • Open the AnkiHub add‑on → make sure you’re subscribed to the correct v12 deck (e.g. AnKing Step deck).
    • Use the AnkiHub options to re‑download/restore deleted cards from the shared AnkiHub deck if that’s supported for your deck (most official ones do allow restoring deleted cards from AnkiHub).
    • Let it finish; this should give you a clean v12 structure with all the shared cards.

4. If you want me to be more concrete

If you can share:

  • The exact AnkiHub deck name you’re subscribed to (e.g. “AnKing Overhaul v12 – AnkiHub” or similar), and
  • A screenshot or description of:
    • Your deck list, and
    • A sample card’s tags that shows both v11 and v12,

I can outline a precise click‑by‑click sequence tailored to your setup.

It looks like the auto-responder pretty well captured some answers to your questions, though please let us know if there is anything else we can help with. :mending_heart:

ok thanks. also as far as the v11 tag. should i delete the cards in the v11 section as well? or just delete the tags and leave the cards alone?

I would opt to leave the cards alone, just because many of the cards that were in v11 are also still found (in updated form) in v12

The v11 tags are more or less redundant, or worthless, once you’ve updated to v12. The cards, though, may still be alive and well (some may be older, but a lot will still be around)

So in short:

  • I would delete the v11 tags and just be on my way.
  • I wouldn’t go out of my way to delete any cards unless you really feel the need, as many will still be in the deck in updated form

Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.
