So I am studying with the Anking MCAT deck, I have used the AnkiHub protect function for the majority of my cards but realized I am losing out on some of the great edits you guys add, but I also want to maintain many of the added notes I have added to the “Extras” on some of the cards which help me such as acronyms and pictures.
Is there a way to get the updated cloze/deck from AnkiHub BUT maintain the extras portion with things I have customizes?
Hello
If I’m understanding correctly, yes. But just to make sure, for clarity:
- If you protect the Extra field only the Extra field will be protected. The Text field will still be free to receive updates.
- If you protect the Text field only the Text field will be protected. The Extra field will still be free to receive updates.
Additionally, you can protect a field for an individual note: Protect Field for Individual Note
Or you can protect a field for all notes: Managing Protected Fields
Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.
Hi Brian, yes, I would only want the extra field to be protected, yes, only having the actual “text” of a cloze card being changed. What is the step by step way of adding such tag?
Never mind i see the link ill try it
So I removed my protect all tag from all my cards and instead followed instructions and only protected the extra. Now my notes are all tagged AnkiHub Protect: Extra. Does that now solve the issue, just to confirm?
I followed the instructions for the Individual note tutorial just did it for all cards instead , is that not the move?
Should I re-add a protect all and then go to the protect field for all notes?
Essentially, do I need to have a tag on Anki itself for each of the cards, or does doing everything through Ankihub eliminate that need? Ex. Just can I just select the box for extra on AnkiHub, or do I need to
If you ‘protect all’ it will protect all of your fields. In most cases this is not desirable, or recommended (for the obvious reasons that you can’t get any updates at all).
In theory you could do it for all cards, but it would probably be easier to just globally protect that field via the other tutorial (there are other reasons for this, though they probably don’t merit explaining the little details). It’s just easier to do (and easier to undo) and easier to track, which is why the feature exists.
Unless you want to protect all fields (which is unlikely) I would not suggest adding a protect all.
You don’t need to manually add tags. You can do that, but the tutorials I shared above make the process easier and obviate the need to manually add tags to cards (which can be pretty tedious after a while, and difficult to track).
Let me know if that all makes sense, and if you have any other questions. Happy to answer however I can to be of help.
I think I kinda overcomplicated things but bear with me, but I had added the protect extra tag to all cards using the instructions for individual notes, I had just selected all cards when I did it rather than just one at a time. I now also updated my protection through AnkiHub, so I essentially did both. Now should I remove the protect all tags I had added to each of my notes? Or at this point does it not matter? Would going through AnkiHub have added the protect extra tag anyway?
Haha, all good. We’ve all been there before.
At this point I think you’ve done about everything that can be done. For sure your Extra field is protected at this point. I would just leave things as they are and enjoy smashing the space bar from now until your test date.
All-in-all, doing it through AnkiHub would have achieved the same thing (which is what it’s designed for). But, one way or the other you’ve arrived at the same end point.
If there’s anything else I can help with please let me know.
