Managing New B&B Cards for Already Watched Videos – Manual Unsuspension Needed?

Hi Guys,

UK med student here using B&B Step 1 videos as a primary resource alongside the Anking Deck.

Just wanted to ask a question about new B&B cards for videos I have already watched. As an example for the high yield EKGs video in the cardiology section I have found a few new cards that I have never seen before. I came across this incidentally when I was helping a fellow med student set up Anki for the first time. Do I now have to manually unsuspend new cards for each video I have already watched?

Hello,

Tagging is always an ongoing process, especially as videos are updated, changed, etc. So long as the primary sources are improving and updating the tagging process will always be doing the same.

Thus, there may be additional cards tagged for a particular video depending on what, and when, you have studied.

That being said, you can bring up which cards are under a given tag and suspended pretty quickly. This is an overarching example just using the step1 tag, but the same basic idea would work for anything:

tag:#AK_Step1_v12 is:suspended

This can also be done by clicking on a given tag, or parent tag, and command+clicking ‘Suspended’ here:

This will bring up cards that are both tagged by whatever tag you’re clicking on and that are suspended. Which should make the process a bit quicker.

Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.

Thank you for your reply and explanation! My main concern is that I might be missing key information from videos I had already ‘completed’ due to the addition of new cards. Would it be best to unsuspend all the newly added cards for each video tag I’ve already covered to ensure I don’t miss anything? Sorry if I’m not being clear—I do understand how to unsuspend cards using the method you described, but I’m more wondering about the best approach moving forward.

It’s hard to say since I don’t know which cards you’ve studied and which you may not have. If you want to be as comprehensive as possible you would of course study all of the cards there.

If you have too many cards to studied there may be a trade-off at some point, though that will likely come down to your schedule, demands, etc., etc.

If I unsuspend all new cards now, is there a way to ensure that any future new cards for those video tags are automatically unsuspended, so I don’t have to keep checking manually?

Unfortunately Anki doesn’t have any option for automatic suspending or un-suspending of cards. It’s an architectural limitation to the software itself, for better or worse

Ah I see.

Apologies for asking another question, but just to clarify—I had completed the entire Anatomy and Physiology section in B&B. At the time, I went through each video, unsuspended all the relevant cards, studied them, and they are now mature. But now, when reviewing that same tag, I’ve found an additional 163 cards that I’ve never seen before.

I also noticed that within each video tag, there’s a sub-tag called ‘extra.’ What exactly does this mean? I’m a bit confused about how these new tags are being applied and whether they contain entirely new information or just reclassified content.

My main concern is that I feel like I’m missing key information. Videos I initially thought were completed now feel incomplete, and the studied cards I associated with them no longer feel finished due to the addition of so many new ones.

Yep, that sort of hews back to what we discussed earlier which is that tagging is always an ongoing process. It is the case that sometimes sources themselves are updated, or changed, and as such tagging is revised over time.

Understandable. It sounds like you have a good handle on how to search for cards based on tags, and hopefully my explanation has done some justice to how/why tagging is always an ongoing process. Though obviously if you have any other questions happy to help as much as I’m able.

Thanks so much for taking the time to help, mate – I really appreciate it. Apologies if it feels like I’m asking the same question repeatedly; I just want to make sure everything’s locked in! That feeling of missing key info had me a bit nervous, but I think the strategy going forward is to review what I’ve already considered completed and see if it’s worth revisiting, as you mentioned. Like you said striking that balance is key
