Need help subscribing and switching to V12 without losing previous notes

I want to upgrade my deck to V12 but had made extensive additions to my notes from V11
How can I make sure I do not lose these?
By doing so, will I miss out on any updates made to the new deck?
How do I add new deck and delete old deck?

Sorry if this was asked elsewhere. I saw bits and pieces but was still confused

Hello,

I’d be happy to help.

It depends a bit on what additions you made to your cards. You can protect fields, which will ensure that you don’t lose any of your modifications. That is an option that’s built into the AnkiHub system for just this very reason.

It’s probably worth noting that there is a trade-off inherent there, though. By protecting a field you ensure that AnkiHub cannot update that field (and so you won’t lose your edits). However, by the same token, protecting a given field will protect that field for all notes, which similarly prevents AnkiHub from updating that field for any note in your collection.

Thus, it’s a bit of a trade-off. Inherently, it’s not possible to both protect your edits, and still get updates, to the same field.

This tutorial can walk you through how to protect fields for notes in your collection: Managing Protected Fields

Alternately, it is possible to protect a field for an individual note (though this may be enormously tedious if you’ve made a lot of edits and have to hunt them all down): Protect Field for Individual Note

Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.

Thank you for replying

Has there been lots if updates to the text part of the notes? Where the question answer is. That is the only part I modified.

Is there a way to create a back up to revert changes if I somehow mess up my previous deck?

Also after adding the deck, is there cards I have to delete from V11?
Is there any tutorial that would run me through, subscribing, adding deck, protecting the field and deleting old cards ?

Hard to say, but it’s very likely. There are updates that go out basically every day.

Anki makes backups periodically, typically many times a day. You can manually make a backup, though it’s not often necessary.

This tutorial can walk you through how to restore from a backup: How to Restore From Backup

There’s nothing you have to delete. A small number of cards may have been deleted between v11 and v12.

You can search for this string and it will bring up cards that ARE tagged by v11, and are NOT tagged by v12, for example: tag:#AK_Step1_v11 -tag:#AK_Step1_v12

You can repeat this basic pattern for any combination of tags, ultimately.

The tutorials I linked above walk you through how to protect fields.

  1. Make sure you have an active membership: Sign In
  2. Install the Ankihub addon: Install Ankihub Addon (New User)
  3. Subscribe to and install a deck: Subscribe/Install Step Deck (New User)
  4. Start using the deck: How to Get Started Studying

thank you
where in the 1-4 steps do I do the protect step?

I would do it before you sync the deck, for sure. Otherwise, upon syncing, you’re likely to have your fields overwritten.
