I had an older version (not v12) of Anking at the start of medical school.
I put down very important notes on the biochem and genetics section.
Notes from class and other third party resources.
Iâm looking to upgrade to the v12 for the systems but when I upgrade to v12 I loose all my important notes from biochem and genetics in the extra section.
I really need those notes and want to keep reviewing them.
How do upgrade to v12 and still keep those cards and notes
I have seen similar questions asked but the solutions did not work for me. Please help if you can

Based on my search of the AnkiHub community forums, I understand your situation with upgrading to AnKing v12 while preserving your important notes in the Extra field. Hereâs how you can do this:
Solution: Protect Your Extra Field
The key is to protect your Extra field before upgrading to v12. This prevents AnkiHub from overwriting your personal notes when you update.
Option 1: Protect the Extra field globally
Log into the AnkiHub website
Go to the main page of your AnKing deck
Click the 3 dots in the top right corner
Select âManage protected dataâ
Check the box next to âExtraâ field to protect it
Save your changes
Then proceed with your v12 upgrade
Option 2: Protect specific cardsâ Extra fields
If you only want to protect certain cards:
In Anki, open the browser and find the cards with your important notes
Select these cards (use Ctrl+Click for multiple selections)
Right-click and select âAnkiHub: Protect Fieldsâ
Choose âExtraâ from the list
Now these specific cardsâ Extra fields will be protected during the upgrade
After protecting your fields:
Subscribe to the AnKing v12 deck on AnkiHub
Sync your AnkiHub add-on
Your protected Extra field notes will remain untouched while the rest of the deck updates
According to the AnkiHub documentation, the Extra field is not automatically protected by default, which is why your notes were being overwritten when you tried to upgrade previously.
If you encounter any issues with this process, please provide more specific details about what steps youâve tried so I can offer more targeted assistance.
You can protect a field, which will preserve any edits youâve made to that field. This works in both directions though: protecting a field will preserve your edits, though it also means you canât receive any updates to that field.
Hi Brian, thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my question. The solution you provided protects all the cards in the v11 deck. i want only specific cards to be protected. can you please show how i can do this. all the biochem cards and just a few genetics cards to be protected. The rest can update and change because I have not touched those cards yet.
It can be a bit tedious to protect notes individually, if you have a lot, but this tutorial can walk you through how to protect a given field, or fields, for individual notes: Protect Field for Individual Note
Give that a shot, let me know how you fare, and weâll go from there and hopefully we can get you squared away.
When I right click, the option to protect fields is greyed out. I am unable to click on that option. The only option I have on that ankihub tab is to âcopy anki note ID to clipbopardâ
I see from the image you shared that this is a card that appears to be potentially from the Zanki deck, rather than being a current AnkiHub card
If you note that the âview on AnkiHubâ button is also grayed out, which may very well be an indication. If you can share the note ID we can double-check that particular card for you
But, the converse is true here as well: if itâs not an AnkiHub card thereâs no need to protect the fields as AnkiHub wonât be able to edit the card one way or the other
Sorry to butt in here, but I just wanted to share something that might work as well
Another solution could be to copy your current content from the Extra field (the one with your personal notes) into another field that AnkiHub doesnât overwrite, like the âPathomaâ or âLecture Notesâ field
(Thereâs a quick way to do this, built into Anki)
Then you can sync with v12. That way, youâll get the updated Extra field from v12 with all the new info, BUT still have your original notes preserved in another field for reference.
Not perfect, but it keeps your stuff safe and reviewable!
this is the best option but not sure how to go about it. this option will make it possible to update and get all the new content from v12 but still keep my lecture notes. please elaborate on how to mass move from extra to lecture notes
Make a backup of your Anki collection before you start (just in case)
In the Card Broswer, select the cards you want to move the content for
Right-click and choose âChange Note Type"
At the top, donât change the note type itself, keep it the same notetype (should be AnKing Overhaul - AnKing Step Deck / AnKingMed) so your cards stay linked with AnkiHub for updates
Youâll see two columns: Current and New
Under the New column, find the row labeled âLecture Notesâ (or any field you want to use that AnkiHub doesnât sync)
In that row, click the dropdown and change it to âExtraâ
This tells Anki to move the current content from the Extra field into the Lecture Notes field.
Note: If thereâs anything already in the Lecture Notes field, it will be overwritten.
Click Save at the top.
That should do it! The content from the Extra field should now be moved into the Lecture Notes field for all the cards you selected.
Thank you so much that worked.
i updated to v12 and the cards have updated but i still have zanki as the categories as shown below. is this normal or is it suppose to change to âankingâ
Itâs normal. Updating wonât change your subdeck organization, as those are left alone by design
You can change, or rearrange, them as you see fit though the AnKing Step deck doesnât use subdecks by default and so wonât impose any on you. Itâs entirely up to your personal preference how, or if, you want to adjust them.
