I used the old zanki and lolnotacop decks, and now I want to upgrade to V12. The problem is that I have tons of notes that I made in the “extra” field of the cards in these two decks.
I want to be able to do two things simultaneously. First, I want to keep my notes when I upgrade. Second, I also want to be able to see all the stuff that’s been added to “extra” as a result of the years of anking.
How do I go about doing this? Do I need to rename the “extra” section in my old decks to “lecture notes” and protect that field when I upgrade to v12? Admittedly I don’t know how to do the renaming part, but it seems like something that would work to my untrained mind. Do I need to rename my “extra” to something else entirely and try to find a way to protect that new field (I have no idea how this would work)?
I found an old guide or two, and I tried updating the cloze-lolnotacop card type to some semblance of the anking card type by copying and pasting all the stuff in the front and back templates and styling from an updated v12 deck a friend has. When I do, I get this error message, related to “one by one”:
(I searched for “One by one” in hopes that it would show me an obvious answer, but it didn’t)
Newest update - I figured out how to change note types. I assume that I should be changing cards from other note types to the ankingoverhaul note type, which leads me back to my original question.
How do I make it so that the changes I’ve made in the extra field don’t get altered when I upgrade to v12, and how do I do this while also getting all the new stuff that the v12 deck has in those locations? Do I change field names after changing all the cards of the saCloze type to the ankingoverhaul type?
As an added second question, how do I make sure that the changes I made to the actual text of some of the notes (for example, maybe I changed the wording of the text in a card, or made part of it bolded when previously it was italicized, etc) doesn’t get altered? If I protect the text field, will the following two things happen specifically in the text field: (i) I download all the new cards that I was missing (all the cards that have been added over the past few years and (ii) all the changes to cards that I have altered won’t be overwritten.
Basically, you have to find all the cards you have altered and highlight all of them → right click → ankihub protect
This will protect only those cards you have selected from being overwritten. This might be challenging to do since you have to find each and every card you have modified.
Another way is to protect the extra field (or any other field for that matter) before you install the step deck by going to ankihub → anking overhaul → top right 3 dots → manage protected data → select the fields you don’t want overwritten.
This will protect every single field in every card in the anking deck, so nothing will be overwritten. but this way you will not receive any changes.
You can then take your time and find all the changes and protect them with the right click tag method above
After you have selected everything you don’t want overwritten, you can unprotect the extra field on the website and do the following:
Go to browse in your Anki → at the top click on ankihub addon tab → press reset all local changes
This will restore everything to what AnkiHub has unless you have specifically protected those fields
You have to protect the text field for that card like I have mentioned above
If you protect the text field on the website:
Yes you will receive new cards, but no changes to existing cards’ text fields
Correct, only for the text field however. If you made changes to extra, you will also need to protect the extra section for that field not to be overwritten
All the zanki cards I have are of the saCloze note type. I can change them to the ankingoverhaul note type, and then I can make it so that everything in the extra field goes instead to the lecture notes field. This is all before I’ve synced with ankihub.
Then if I sync with ankihub while protecting the lecture notes field but not the extra field, all my personal edits (that used to be in extra but are now in the lecture notes field) will remain and I’ll get all the stuff that the anking people put into the extra field. Is this correct?
