Short answer: Yes, you can update and keep your personal media, but you need to do it carefully.
Here’s how this usually works with AnKing v12 + AnkiHub:
-
Buying AnkiHub ($6/month)
- This gives you access to the AnkiHub AnKing deck and future updates.
- You’ll be able to subscribe to the latest AnKing v12 deck and sync changes.
-
Your personal media (UWorld tables, First Aid images, etc.)
- These are stored locally in your Anki collection, attached to your notes.
- Simply updating via AnkiHub does not automatically delete your personal media, as long as your notes and fields are not overwritten or deleted.
-
The important part: protecting your edits/media
Before subscribing and updating:- Make a full backup:
File → Export → Collection.apkg (include scheduling)and save it somewhere safe. - Make sure your personal media is in separate fields from the ones that AnKing/AnkiHub uses.
- If you inserted UWorld tables or First Aid images into existing official fields, updates might overwrite or change those fields if there are conflicts.
- If you used custom fields (e.g. “My UWorld Notes”, “My FA images”), they are usually safe, since AnkiHub doesn’t control those fields.
- Make a full backup:
-
Recommended process to update from an older AnKing v12
- Back up (as above).
- Install the AnkiHub add-on, log in, and subscribe to the official AnKing deck on AnkiHub.
- Use the add-on to link your existing deck to the AnkiHub version instead of importing as new.
- When conflicts arise, prefer to keep your version for cards where you’ve added important media.
If you tell me:
- Which Anki version you’re on,
- Whether your UWorld/First Aid content is in custom fields or existing fields,
I can outline exact click-by-click steps so you can safely update without risking your media.

It is possible that they can be removed, yeah. Though you can protect those fields if you like
This tutorial can walk you through how to protect specific fields, if you like: Managing Protected Fields
Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with. ![]()
