Optional Tags not working

Hello,

I am having an issue getting cards to show up in my optional tags group on anki hub. I have an active subscription and have added the tags under the “AnkiHub_Optional” tag and used the “suggest optional tags” button without success. I’ve tried resetting the optional tags group and syncing with ankihub but can’t get any cards to show up on the ankihub website.

Any help would be appreciated!

Here are a few things to double‑check that usually explain this behavior:

  1. Make sure the tag structure is exactly right in Anki Desktop

In the Browser, your tags should look like this (note the colons):

    AnkiHub_Optional::YourGroupName

    Common pitfalls:

    • Extra spaces anywhere (e.g. AnkiHub_Optional :: or AnkiHub_ Optional).
    • Different capitalization (Ankihub_optional, Ankihub_Optional, etc.).
    • Using hyphens/underscores instead of colons for the group level (e.g. AnkiHub_Optional_YourGroupName).

From your screenshot it looks correct, but it’s worth clicking on the tag list in the left sidebar and confirming the exact spelling and that those notes are truly tagged at note level (Anki’s default).

  2. Confirm those notes are actually part of the AnkiHub deck

Optional tags only work for notes that:

    • Belong to a deck that’s linked to an AnkiHub shared deck and
    • Are actually synced with that deck.

    In the Browser:

    • Select some of the tagged notes.
    • Check that the deck is the one that’s connected to the relevant AnkiHub deck (e.g. an AnKing Overhaul deck that you’ve linked in the add‑on).
    • Make sure they’re not suspended notes that were imported from somewhere else or in a completely different deck.
  3. Force a full sync from Anki to AnkiHub

Sometimes the optional tags index on the website doesn’t update until there’s a fresh push.

    Try:

    1. In Anki: Tools → Add-ons → AnkiHub → Config and confirm you’re logged into the same AnkiHub account as on the website.
    2. Then: Tools → AnkiHub → Sync to AnkiHub (or use the AnkiHub button) and wait for it to fully complete.
    3. After that finishes, refresh the AnkiHub deck page, then click Suggest optional tags again.
  4. Check which deck’s optional tag group you’re viewing

On the AnkiHub website, make sure:

    • You’re on the correct deck page (the one linked to the deck where those tagged notes live).
    • The optional tag group you’re viewing matches the group name (everything after AnkiHub_Optional::) that you used in Anki.
  5. If it’s still empty, we’ll likely need logs/screenshots

If none of the above fixes it, please reply here with:

    • A screenshot of:
      • The tag tree in the Anki Browser showing AnkiHub_Optional::…
      • One of the affected cards’ info (Card → Info) showing its tags and deck.
    • Which deck on AnkiHub you’re trying to create optional tags for (link if possible).
    • Your Anki version and AnkiHub add‑on version.

With that info, it’ll be easier to tell whether this is a configuration issue or an AnkiHub bug with optional tags.

Hello,

Just a few things to clarify:

  1. You created an additional tag group for the AnKing Step Deck and are now trying to add these tags to some cards, correct? You are not trying to do this for your personal deck on AnkiHub.
  2. Please send a screenshot of one of the cards that has the new tag.
  3. In Anki, go to Help > About and send us a screenshot of your Anki version.
  4. Please ensure you are on the latest version of Anki. You can download it here: https://apps.ankiweb.net/. After downloading, simply run the downloaded file to update your application.
  5. On your Anki main screen, go to Tools > Add-ons > Check for Updates. After the update is complete, please restart Anki.
  6. After updating Anki and the AnkiHub add-on, please try again and let me know what you see after suggesting the tags. Is there an error message?
